EBC Trek – Active Rest Day and Incredible Views!

December 21, 2018

North Ridge of Ama Dablam (Sonam Dorje Sherpa)

An active rest day is important during a trek to Everest Base Camp. Our goal for an active rest day is to continue to acclimatize to the new elevation while still getting out a little bit to check out the scenery. The day ends by staying in the same lodge at the same elevation.

Lhotse in the sun from Dingboche (Sonam Dorje Sherpa)

Our December EBC Team enjoyed a great active rest today in Dingboche (14,469 ft). Tomorrow, the plan for the team is to eat breakfast at 7:00am and trek to Lobuche Village (16,200 ft) by 8:00am.

Having fun above Dingboche (Sonam Dorje Sherpa)

This team is having fun – as is evident by the team photo on the ridge between Pheriche and Dingboche!

Breezy in Argentina

The trail to camp 1 (Luke Reilly)

Andy and Jonathan checked in today from Aconcagua and things are going well.  Jonathan and his team are down at the Casa de Piedra camp tonight and are looking forward to getting up to Plaza Argentina tomorrow and settling into basecamp.  There will be a nice meal waiting for them and maybe even a shower.

Andy reported that the team made a carry up to C1 today and the conditions were a little breezy but not too bad.  We will keep an eye on the weather but Andy’s team plans to move up to C1 tomorrow.  Everything is moving forward on Aconcagua.

Five Days Before EBC and Christmas

Trekking in December (Ang Tseri Sherpa)

Another gorgeous day of trekking for our team in the Khumbu Valley! When we put a trip together, this is how we draw it up! The Team was up early for a visit to the Pangboche Monastery before following the trail to Dingboche. This is a gentle day of trekking with only a few hills to climb.

Trekking to Dingboche with Ama Dablam (Ang Tseri Sherpa)

One of the hills has the small village of Shomare on it, where the team stopped for lunch. From Shomare, the team heads uphill and onto an open area where many summer homes are located for grazing yaks. A couple more hours and the team rounds the bend and can see the destination of the day, Dingboche!

Mani Stones below Ama Dablam (Sonam Dorje Sherpa)

From Dingboche, the team can see Lhotse, Island Peak, and the North Ridge of Ama Dablam outside their window. Tomorrow is an acclimatization day for the team. They will have the opportunity to climb the ridge and possibly drop down to Pheriche.

Plaza Argentina Basecamp

Packing mule loads in Penitentes (Jonathan Schrock)

Today was the first big day of the trip getting up to the Plaza Argentina Basecamp.  Andy checked in and the crew has settled into their tents.  Tomorrow is the first rest day on the mountain and everyone will take the time to get ready for the hard work ahead.

Hot on their tail is Johnny and team down in Penitentes.  Everyone is soaking up the luxuries of having running water and a comfy bed for the last night before hitting the trail tomorrow.  The duffel shuffle in Penitentes today included weighing out mule loads and prepping all the food for safe transport on the back of the animals.  They’ll be getting an early start tomorrow and will make their way to Pampa de Leñas where they will also sample some fine backcountry barbecue.

Light snow for the trek to Tengboche

December 18, 2018

Tengboche Monastery at night (Tye Chapman)

Our Sherpa Trekking Team was up early for their trek to Tengboche (12,369 ft – 3,770 m). They were welcomed with a light dusting of fresh snow.  The team had a fine trek and as the day continued, the skies cleared up! They made excellent time and everyone is feeling great in Tengboche.

Tengboche with surrounding peaks (Ang Jangbu Sherpa)

After a good lunch at the Dudh Koshi River crossing, they made the climb up to the village. The afternoon was spent visiting the monastery and taking in the breathtaking view of Ama Dablam.

All is well in a winter Khumbu Valley!

Smooth Sailing in Argentina

December 17, 2018

Dinner in Mendoza
The Horcones Valley (Luke Reilly)

Both teams have checked in and things are off to a smooth start this year in Argentina.

Andy and his team have pulled into Casa de Piedra after their second day on the trail.  Basecamp is just around the corner and they’ll get an early start out of the gate tomorrow morning.  The brave souls in the group will make the chilly river crossing in the morning on foot while others may choose to jump on the mules for a free ride.  Both options are fun and will no doubt get the group laughing.  I’ll keep you posted on when they arrive at the Plaza Argentina Basecamp.

Jonathan Schrock and crew have secured their Aconcagua climbing permits and all the food packing and gear prep has been done in Mendoza.  Solid work, guys.  Sometimes the hardest job is just getting out the door!  They are enjoying a meal in Mendoza this evening and I’m sure the team is buzzing with excitement with the thought of getting to Penitentes tomorrow.

Rest day and a birthday in Namche

December 17, 2018

Ama Dablam, Lhotse, and Mount Everest from Namche (Greg Vernovage)

Our Sherpa Trek Team had a nice rest day in Namche. They took a short hike up hill to the museum in Namche where they saw a traditional Sherpa Home and toured what I call the Sherpa Hall of Fame. This museum has beautiful pictures and tells stories about many of the long time Sherpa climbers from the Khumbu Valley.

Everest Basecamp Trek (Greg Vernovage)

After the museum, it was time to rest for the big day to Tengboche tomorrow. A birthday celebration is always welcome during any trek and Abhi along with the trekking team did it right in the Khumbu Lodge.

Happy Birthday Abhi!

Full Steam Ahead-Aconcagua!

Checking in at the Aconcagua Provincial Park (Andy Polloczek)

Andy checked in this afternoon with nothing but good news. Andy, Rikki, Leo and crew have made their way to Pampa de Leñas camp on the first day of the trek to basecamp. Looks like a nice and sunny day to me.  With all those smiles, I’m not sure where you could go wrong. Right about now, the team is comfortable in their tents after a great backcountry bbq meal of steaks, eggplant, and maybe a dash of wine. Tomorrow is another day on the trail up the Horcones Valley to Casa de Piedras.

Down in Mendoza, Senior Guide Jonathan Schrock, has met the team and gear checks and food packing are well underway. The big task tomorrow is to secure Aconcagua climbing permits and make sure gear has been packed thoroughly. Once all the “chores” have been knocked out, they’ll enjoy a classic Argentine meal and get a good nights rest at low elevation. They’re ready to hit the trail!

A perfect day in the Khumbu Valley

December 16, 2018

Hooray from Everest View (Sonam Dorje Sherpa)
Namaste with clear skies and Ama Dablam, Lhotse and Everest (Sonam Dorje Sherpa)

Our December EBC Trek showed us what a perfect day in the Khumbu Valley looks like. The Team started the day with a good breakfast followed by an acclimatization hike to the Everest View Hotel.  Not a cloud in the sky for their first views of Ama Dablam, Lhotse and Mount Everest.  From the Everest View, the team trekked around to Khunde for lunch.

Kilimanjaro reunion in Namche (Phunuru Sherpa)

Upon returning to the lodge in Namche, a special reunion was had. Stay with me here…some of our December EBC Team climbed Kilimanjaro a couple years ago and their leader was IMG Guide Phunuru Sherpa.  Phunuru is on his way to Kathmandu to prepare for his upcoming climb of Kilimanjaro and stopped in to say hello to the team and have a mini reunion with his Kili climbers.

Perfect weather and meeting friends.  That is a perfect day in the Khumbu Valley!
