Holding Pattern on Aconcagua

December 28, 2018

The view from C2 on Aconcagua (Luke Reilly)

The view from C2 on Aconcagua (Luke Reilly)

Andy, Rikki, Leo and company have made their way back to Mendoza.  Time for a hot shower and a good meal.  The food on the expedition is excellent for mountain standards, but nothing beats a solid meal in Mendoza after a couple weeks on the hill.

Johnny and Martin just finished whipping up some mountain pizzas for the crew at Camp 2.  Things are a little windier than they’d like but they’ve got a good view of the upper mountain to keep an eye on conditions.  They will take another “day off” tomorrow and maybe take a walk outside of camp to keep the legs moving and check out some interesting views nearby.

Vinson Season Off and Rolling!

Getting ready for takeoff to Union Glacier (Austin Shannon)
The Team (Austin Shannon)
The Team (Austin Shannon)
ALE Flight Briefing (Austin Shannon)
ALE Flight Briefing (Austin Shannon)

It’s Vinson Massif time.  What a way to start the new year!  Especially fun when we have a custom, family-group trip with one of our top IMG Senior Guides, Austin Shannon.  Everyone arrived in Punta Arenas, Chile without problems.  Poor Austin, however, had to leave home on Christmas day.  Guess that’s just what guides do.

They’ve been furiously food shopping and making final gear checks.  Today’s the big briefing with ALE, the flight service.  Flying 2000 miles to an icy glacier landing strip at 80 degrees S. latitude is fairly logistically involved.  Exciting as can be, too.  The team’s been informed that if weather holds, they’ll be flying to the Ice tonight.  4 hours in an IL 76, a 1970’s era Russian military cargo jet.  Soon as possible thereafter, it’s another 1 hour flight in a Twin Otter over to the actual Vinson base camp.

Everything is moving forward according to schedule right now and we’re hoping it all stays that way.  It’s Antarctica so everything’s at the mercy of the weather, but so far mother nature looks as though she wants to cooperate.

Stay tuned.

Kili Team Readies for the Summit

Reaching high camp is always exciting, regardless of the expedition.  You know that it’s now ‘Game Time’!  The months of training, the work of putting your kit of personal equipment together, the travel to East Africa and meeting the Chagga, not to mention the thrill of having one of the most active and successful IMG Sherpa guides (too many 8000 m summits to remember) at the helm when you arrive.  Phunuru flew from Kathmandu at Christmas to climb with this team, as he does often.  Christmas on the mountain, New Year’s on safari…..it’s almost too much.

And now you’re at high camp.  The grunt work is done and you’re anxious to get started for the summit.  Our 7 day climb itinerary allows us to get to high camp early and with only a short hiking day.  Lots of time to prep, pack, eat and rest (as much as is possible).  The weather is good and start time will come early.  Butterflies in your stomach? A bunch!  “Put me in, coach”.  It’s game day and you’re ready.

We won’t wish them luck,  don’t think they’ll need it.  We know they’ll finish strong, make good decisions and look after one another.  That goes for the Chagga, Phunuru and all team members.  We’ll be checking messages early for news of a safe, successful and enjoyable summit.  I’m excited for them!

Our December Trekking Team made it down to Namche today.  Leaving Phortse the team headed down hill to the river before climbing back up to a very small village named Mong.  A special surprise paid a visit to the team on their trek below Phortse, Musk deer were in the forest!  These are small animals that enjoy the Phortse environment.

From Mong, it is a very nice trek to Namche, making twists and turns with the river below.  As planned with the itinerary, our December Trekking Team will take a helicopter from Namche to Kathmandu in the morning.  This is a great way to cut a few days off any trek if time does not permit staying longer.  Judging from the photos Sonam Dorje sent home, this team got along famously the last couple weeks!

Great Trek in the Khumbu Valley!

Kilimanjaro Team Up to Karanga Camp

December 27, 2018

December Kilimanjaro Team at Karanga Camp (Phunuru Sherpa)

December Kilimanjaro Team at Karanga Camp (Phunuru Sherpa)

Phunuru got a few photos out from Karanga Camp after a great day of trekking. The team is doing great and the weather was very nice for the climb from Barranco to Karanga Camp (13,066 ft). It was a short day of climbing up the Barranco Wall and onto Karanga. This is a fun day of trekking that starts with a short hike to the wall. Once at the wall, the guide team spreads out, helping everyone through the moderate rock section. Once through this section, everything opens up and the team can see above and below for miles. The plan for tomorrow is to trek by 8am to Barafu Camp (15,000 ft) and put themselves in position to summit the following night.

All is well on Kilimanjaro!

Dropping into Phortse on the December Trek

Sonam Dorje Sherpa checked in overnight to let us know the team is doing well. Today was on the cooler side with fog rolling in and out most of the day. Leaving Pheriche, above tree line and dropping down to Phortse is a great feeling. Phortse is one of the more beautiful villages that we visit during our treks. The majority of our climbing Sherpa Team lives in Phortse and our trekking team will receive a great home coming from everyone there. Tomorrow, the team will trek down to Namche where they will be picked up by a planned helicopter ride back to Lukla.

Busy in South America

Camp 2 on Aconcagua (Luke Reilly)

Andy and his team woke up to strong winds this morning and the tents were rattling all night.  This custom private trip did a heck of a job on the mountain this year and decided to play it conservative and head down to Plaza de Mulas this morning.  This group had a great journey, stuck together as a team and enjoyed their trip regardless of the wide range of age and experience.  They’ll be in basecamp shortly enjoying some pizza and maybe a hot shower.

Down at Camp 2, Jonathan and his team are in a bit of a holding pattern.  It appears that the winds will begin to tapper in a couple of days and they’ll put together a strategic plan of when to move to Camp 3 and make their summit push from there.  Their carry and cache today went well to Camp 3 and everything is in position.  Everyone is healthy and will benefit from the extra days of acclimatization at camp.

Ilyushin IL-76 at Union Glacier (Luke Reilly)

In a different part of the continent, Senior Guide Austin Shannon has arrived in Punta Arenas, Chile to kick off the 2018/19 Mount Vinson expeditions in Antarctica.  He’s busy packing away and doing a little food shopping.  His group will be showing up this afternoon and they will be busy with gear checks and final preparations for the flight to Union Glacier on the Ilyushin IL-76.

Aconcagua Teams High on the Mountain

Camp 3 on Aconcagua (Luke Reilly)

Aconcagua teams are getting into position for summit day.  Andy and his team made the move up to Camp 3 today and are in position to make an attempt at the summit tomorrow.  The plan is to take a shot in the morning.  We will be wishing them lots of luck with health and weather in the morning.

Down at Camp 2, Jonathan and his team are keeping an eye on the weather and looking for the right day to tag the top.  Jonathan reported that it was sunny with a light breeze at camp today.  They will be looking for a window in the weather to make a carry to Camp 3 and then move up to get their shot at the summit.

Stay tuned for news from Andy’s climb tomorrow!

Looking at Kilimanjaro from Barranco Camp (Eric Simonson)

IMG Guide, Phunuru Sherpa checked in from Barranco Camp (13,000 ft) on Kilimanjaro overnight. The team had a great day of trekking and are now ready to climb the Barranco Wall in the morning.  The team trekked up to the Lava Towers (15,000 ft) before dropping down to camp. This is a great day for acclimatization for the team.

The air gets thicker in Pheriche

December 26, 2018

December Trekking Team at EBC (Sonam Dorje Sherpa)

Our December EBC Trekking Team had another great day on the trail today. The Team departed Gorakshep after breakfast taking the trail uphill for a few minutes which gets the blood moving in their legs. With the Khumbu Glacier on their left, the team winds their way to the hill before Lobuche Village. Once down the hill, the trail opens up and the team is free to move through Lobuche Village and down valley to Pheriche. The oxygen is a bit thicker down in Pheriche and the team will sleep great tonight, having climbed Kala Patthar and visited Everest Base Camp. Tomorrow, the team will head down to Phortse.
