Round 3 on Aconcagua

January 7, 2019

Thumbs Up! (Nickel Wood)

Thumbs Up! (Nickel Wood)

Two down and our third Aconcagua expedition is on deck.  IMG Guides Nickel Wood, Martin Lucero, and their team are in Mendoza putting final touches on shopping and packing.  Everyone arrived without major issues and with all luggage.  Nice to have cleared that hurdle.  Two nights in Mendoza to wrap preparations and secure the climbing permit and then it’s off to Penitentes, at the foot of Aconcagua.  One more night there to prep ‘mules loads’.  The group uses mules to get the bulk of the group gear to base camp at Plaza Argentina (approx. 13,600’).

It’s an exciting time.  They’ve been doing their homework for months and the excitement is palpable.  Enjoy Mendoza, meet your team mates, put final touches on your gear and then it’s game time.  Stay tuned.  Aconcagua is a big mountain and a serious challenge.  23,000’ is high!

Patagonia Trip Wraps Up

Jumping for Joy
Jumping for Joy

Monica and Jamie caught the boat on schedule yesterday and headed down Lago Grey to catch their private transportation back to Puerto Natales.  You might say they were literally ‘jumping for joy’ that they made the decision to explore Torres del Paine and the trekking available in Patagonia.  I think it is safe to say they had an enjoyable trip. That might be a tad of an understatement.

Ecuador team – Imbabura’s in the Bag, Cayambe up next

Team had another great day in Ecuador.  Acclimatization is huge at this point of the trip and a hike to the top of Imbabura was just what the doctor ordered.  Night was spent at the Hacienda Guachala, near the base of Cayambe.  Plan/goal for today is to get up to the hut on Cayambe and sleep at 15K.  Keeping with the ‘acclimatization theme’, they’ll use tomorrow for some training/review and get another night at 15K before taking a shot at the top.

All is pretty much as good as it gets in Ecuador.

Exploring Ecuador While Acclimating

January 6, 2019

Our January 2019 Ecuador expedition is underway which means a bit of sightseeing and a lot of acclimaztization. The group rendezvoused in Quito on Thursday, the 3rd.

Lago Mojanda (Jay Lyon)

IMG Senior Guide, Jay Lyons is joined by our long-time Ecuadorian partner/guide, Romulo Cardenas. They’ve already taken the group to tour Old Town, Quito, crossed the equator, visited the famous market in Otavalo, spent time with Romulo’s old friend, a famed weaver in the town of Peguche and spent a long/fun day hiking outside Otavalo. Here’s their most recent update in Jay’s words:

Phil,

Hiking Fuya Fuya (Jay Lyon)

After an early morning visit to the animal market in Otavalo, we drove to Laguna Mojnada for our first acclimatization hike of Fuya Fuya. We reached the top (14K) and with the weather as good as it gets and energy high, we decided to climb the neighboring summit of Yanaurcu, at just under 14K. A few members enjoyed a swim in the crater lake back at the trailhead. Muy Frio. Before dinner, we visited an old friend of Romulo’s in the town of Peguche and admired his weavings. We saw the results of a lifetime behind a loom. Beautiful.

Team’s fit and healthy and getting on well. We’ll take on Imbabura tomorrow (Sunday). Hoping for the same good weather we had on Fuya Fuya.

–Jay

Nice way to start a trip.

Windy but Fun in Patagonia

January 5, 2019

Fun news this weekend from Patagonia and our custom, private trip to Torres del Paine. Some great photos, too.

Hi IMG,
This is Monica and Jamie with a picture update: high winds forced us to change the schedule for the last two days, but we are still having a blast. Victor has been amazing and came up with wonderful alternatives; we love Nash. We are headed to the Grey Glacier tomorrow, winds allowing.

Maybe they can squeeze in a kayak trip through the icebergs if the winds allow.

Aconcagua Team Back in Mendoza

January 4, 2019

The team celebrating a job well done! (Jonathan Schrock)

The team celebrating a job well done! (Jonathan Schrock)

It’s a wrap.  The team made it to Mendoza last evening.  Huge day but oh what fun.  A big walk down to the road from Plaza Mulas was the first leg.  Nice part was that there was very little in those packs.  Then the duffle shuffle in Penitentes and then their private ground transportation to Mendoza.  Showers, clean clothes and off to a late dinner…..steaks, beer, wine……you name it.

We can’t say enough about the crew.  Jonathan Schrock, Martin Lucero and all our climbers did exactly what Aconcagua demanded and were rewarded for all their efforts.  Just a super job in the most difficult of conditions up high.  A safe, enjoyable summit was the result.  Just great.

Some members may try to catch a flight home tomorrow but most will likely leave Mendoza on the 5th.  They started off 2019 with a serious BANG.  We thank them all for having joined IMG on Aconcagua.

Aconcagua Team Hikes out – Vinson Team at High Camp

January 3, 2019

Almost Out! (Tye Chapman)
Almost Out! (Tye Chapman)
Summit day Terrain on Vinson
Summit day Terrain on Vinson

Jonathan Schrock and his Aconcagua team are doing a power walk today.  Plaza Mulas to the trailhead, then the ‘duffle shuffle’ and then driving to Mendoza.  The horses are definitely heading for the barn.  A long day, for sure, but made infinitely easier with the knowledge that this team busted butt, endured some ridiculous Aconcagua winds, the Viento Blanco, and managed to pull off a safe, successful and enjoyable summit.  That is no small task.

We congratulate them all and will get one final team photo from Jonathan and Tincho before declaring the trip a wrap.  Mendoza is in their sights.

And, while Jonathan, Tincho and crew are walking, Austin and his team at high camp on Vinson are resting.  A couple of big days have put them at high camp and in position to take their summit shot.  No super hurry now, Austin’s just trying to pick the right day weather-wise and strength wise to go get the job done.  This is where guiding becomes more art than technical skill —- finding just that right balance.  Regardless, we’re looking forward to that phone call from the summit.  They’re patient and determined and that’s normally a winning combination.

Holiday Kili Trip Wraps Up

Final packing session, heading home after an amazing adventure (Phunuru Sherpa)

Final packing session, heading home after an amazing adventure (Phunuru Sherpa)

Packing, unpacking and repacking – ah, the expedition life.  This time the packing is for the final time, at least for this trip.

Our Kilimanjaro team has traveled half way around the world, slept 6 nights in a tent, climbed to the summit of Kilimanjaro, seen some of the best game viewing in East Africa (including Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti) and did it all in 15 days, travel included.  Pretty amazing when you think about it.  Oh yeah, spent Christmas on the mountain and New Year’s on safari. Guess that’s frosting on the cake!

The end of one adventure is simply the beginning of the next.  To quote Phunuru:

“All is well here.  Ready to head back home.”

Guess where Phunuru will be again one month from today?

It’s Patagonia Season

January 2, 2019

Torres del Paine (Victor Hernandez)

Patagonia trekking season has kicked off with our private/custom trip to the Torres del Paine National Park.  These two definitely know how to get the year started off on the right foot.  Over the next week they will be exploring many valleys in the National Park and will throw in a little kayaking and some boat rides.  I’ll keep you posted on their adventures as the pictures come in.
