Salkantay Trekkers Taking It All In

July 25, 2011

Peruvian Sunrise

Kelly Ryan called in from the trail yesterday afternoon to report that all continues to go smoothly.  The team is all smiles as they enjoy the trail and the spectacular views along the way.

Today, they will climb up to the beautiful, turquoise colored Suyrococha Lake at 13,900.  After the lake they’ll continue up to the top of Salkantay Pass (15,180 feet), then they’ll enjoy spectacular views of the glacier and the surrounding peaks of the sacred mountain, Salkantay.

The day ends at their campsite at Collcapampa hot springs, located at around 14,000 feet.  A big day but worth the effort!

Hitting The Trail To Machu Picchu

July 24, 2011

The adventure begins.

IMG Guide Kelly Ryan checked in from Peru and reports that the team had a great day touring the local Inca sites and some open air markets in Cuzco. They took particular interest in the layers of history that are literally built on top of each other. Inca stone walls with Spanish mortared walls as the second story and the modern addition of electricity.

The local cuisine they dined on featured several of the thousands of different types of potatoes that grow in Peru. Carb. loading at it’s finest!

They’ll hit the trail today and make their way to their first tent camp at 11,800ft.

All is well.

Peruvian Adventures Begin

July 22, 2011

IMG Guide Kelly Ryan checked in from Peru this morning and reported that everybody (and their luggage) made it to Cuzco in one piece.  They battled long lines in Lima but once on the airplane they were awarded views of the Andes and Salkantay which had just been dusted with a fresh coat of new snow.

They’re all checked into their hotel and are off for lunch and a tour of the town.

All is well in Peru.

I Come From The Stone Age!

July 20, 2011

Jason was pretty excited last night when he called to say that the team had all reached Pinapa, safe and sound.  The title of Heinrich Harrer’s famous story of the first ascent of Carstensz seems appropriate for this final dispatch for the Carstensz team.

Mark, Jeff, Chris, Ted, Colin, Andrew, IMG guide Jason, and our Indonesian guides Steven and Joshua  have had a heck of an adventure.  This afternoon they will have a final farewell meeting with their porters and then share a big dinner with them in the village.  Then, early tomorrow they do the short hike to Ilaga, and hopefully catch the first of a string of flights that will take them back to friends and family, jobs, the internet, and all the things they have missed for the last couple weeks.

It has been a challenging trip for everyone, but they all pulled together and were a strong and competent team (everyone lost quite a bit of weight with 15 consecutive days of hard work, with little rest).  Now they can all sit back, relax, and do some power eating.

Well done, team!!

Kili Team Ready for Safari.

July 19th, 2011

After a quick final descent off the mountain, the team arrived safely back in Moshi for a relaxing afternoon and a evening feast.  Everyone received their summit certificates during the celebration and will be bedding down soon for a well deserved rest.  Tomorrow morning the group departs for Arusha and a short and scenic flight to Serengeti.  No doubt the wildlife viewing will be amazing, as it always is.  There are in for a real treat.  Time to relax now!

Carstensz Climbers Back To The Forest

July 19, 2011

Dani porters in the forest (Photo by Jim Walkley)

IMG guide Jason Edwards reports that yesterday the team put in over 12 miles of ups and downs crossing the plateau, which included 3 river crossings, 2700 feet of climbing, and 3000 feet of descent to their camp on the edge of the forest.  Today they have two more river crossings, a climb back up to over 12,500 feet to cross a ridge, then a big drop down to the first forest camp at 10,000 feet.  Tomorrow will be a long forest day, and with a bit of luck they hope to reach the Dani village of Pinapa which is the first/last outpost of civilization.

The weather has been pretty good overall on the trip, but Jason says that the rain has finally caught up with them the last couple days and they have seen quite a bit of precipitation, which has made the river crossings more sporty.

It’s almost “a wrap” on Kili.

July 18th, 2011.

After a well earned night of rest, Eric Remza called in from the Kili team’s last camp.  They’ll say their goodbys and thank yous to the incredible team of porters, cooks, servers, and guides before heading to the gate.  Then it’s off to the hotel for a celebratory dinner.

Hot Enough For You?

July 18, 2011

Little Tahoma shrouded in clouds. (Photo by Jean Staven)

While most of the folks in the US are sweltering hot these days, here at Mt Rainier we are having a nice cool July so far.  Phil Ershler reports from Ingraham Flats that yesterday they had snow, rain, wind, sleet, and everything in between.  It’s a little nicer today, but it sounds like our Northwest Weather will stay cool for a few more days.

On the other side of the mountain Josh Smith radioed in similar conditions from Camp Schurman. They’re scheduled to climb via the Emmons Route tonight.

And over on the East side, our Little Tahoma program was tucked away nicely at 6800ft on the Frying Pan Glacier and didn’t see as much wind as our other climbers higher on the mountain.  As of 9am they were at  roughly 7200ft moving up to their second camp.

Summer will be here soon…or that’s what the forecasters keep telling us!

July 17th, 2011. 10:00 PM PST.  (July 18th, 2011 for the summit crew!)

Eric Remza called in from Uhuru Point, the high mark on Kilimanjaro.  They summited around 8:00 AM local time and are beginning their descent.  They still have a long and rewarding day ahead of them as they make their way down to the 10,000′ Mweka camp.  Nice work everyone!
