Kili Crew Doin’ Great

A beautiful view of Kili.

A beautiful view of Kili.

September 11, 2014

Woke up at 6 am to a satellite phone call from Andy Politz and the IMG team on Kilimanjaro.  Hiked today from Machame Camp at 10000’ to Shira Camp at 12500’.  All good, everyone did great and the weather’s been super.  About all you can ask for, I guess.

Shira Camp is a cool place.  First totally unobstructed views of Kilimanjaro.

A bit longer day tomorrow with a good chunk of up and then down.  Great for acclimatization.

Stayed tuned.

Kili Team Hits The Trail Today

September 10, 2014

All smiles before they hit the trail.

All smiles before they hit the trail.

And they’re off!! The team is already at the Machame Camp as we make this blog post. Bridget, one of our climbers, sent us this group photo. A couple of flight delays on the way over, and a couple of delayed bags, but all arrived in time (both people and luggage) to get the team prepped and off on schedule. Thanks for Pirjo at CTT Destinations and Edita at the Keys Hotel for rolling with the punches and making things happen for our delayed climbers. That’s what we call team work.

First day on the trail is always super exciting. IMG Senior Guide, Andy Politz, is at the helm so the team’s in good hands. We’ll keep you updated on their progress.

2015 Rainier Dates Released

September 8, 2014

Mt. Rainier (14,410ft.)

Mt. Rainier (14,410ft.)

It’s official, our 2015 dates have been released and with just 8 climbers and 4 guides on each climb they fill up fast… not U2 or Beyonce tickets fast, but pretty fast.

Let’s cut to the chase:

Winter & Denali Prep Seminars: Literally a prerequisite for Denali. 4 experienced guides, 8 climbers, 6.5 days of learning/training/climbing and generally getting your butt kicked by the winter weather. This program is for you if your eyes are on Denali or you’re just looking for a winter challenge. Included in the price of the program is lodging for your first night in Ashford and all breakfasts and dinners on the mountain. What a deal!

Kautz Route: Sweet climbs for the climber with a little (or a lot) of climbing experience. This is the best option for those who’d like to return to Rainier to attempt a different, slightly more challenging route.  1 day traversing the south side of Mt. Rainier, 1 day climbing the Turtle Snowfield, Summit day up the Kautz Ice Chute and 1 day down to the parking lot.

3.5 Day Disappointment Cleaver Route: We believe this program is far and away the most enjoyable way to climb Rainier and is also great introduction into mountaineering. It starts out with a half-day orientation and gear check. On the 1st day of the climb the group will ascend the Muir Snowfield up to Camp Muir (10,000ft). After dinner (usually IMG’s world famous burritos) it’s off to a full nights sleep in the bunkhouse. Day 2 features a nice breakfast (usually pancakes and bacon) followed by a 1/2 day training at Camp Muir. After the training the group will move up to High Camp at the Ingraham Flats (11,000ft). Day 3 of the climb is reserved for the summit attempt and then all the way back down to Paradise and on to IMG HQ to hopefully sign the summit board.

4.5 Day Emmons Route: Another great introduction to Mt. Rainier and mountaineering in general. Maybe just a little tougher than the 3.5 day climb but the extra day on the mountain makes up for it. 2 days to Camp Schurman (9500ft), 1 summit day and 1 day back to the trailhead. A perfect climb for the fit individual looking for a little more adventure.

For the more experienced climbers we have more technical programs like the Fuhrer Finger Route and Liberty Ridge.

Additional programs include: Little Tahoma Seminar, Glacier Skills Seminars, Mountain Day Schools, Advanced Mountain Day Schools and Crevasse Rescue schools are popular programs for climbers looking to get a grasp of the basic skills needed to pursue climbs on their own.

**Please click here to see our registration forms and process. Do you have a group that wants to climb Rainier? If so please read this. And don’t miss our  Rainier FAQ section to answer a lot of your initial question. Note: “Holds” will not be placed on any Rainier climbs.

In some less than ideal weather, IMG Guides Justin Merle and Aaron Mainer joined forces to lead their private teams to the top of Mt. Shuksan earlier today.  It’s back to camp today for the night then some training and possibly an attempt on the North Face route over the next couple days… Thankfully the forecast is calling for some improving weather!

We had a good hike outside of Tingri today. The Team is all healthy, happy and  pretty fit. There’s a new restaurant here at the Hoo Ha Hotel and they’ve cleaned up the town a bit so things are improving. I talked to Phunuru last night and the IMG Sherpas made it to Cho Oyu base camp with the gear truck without issue, and were working on setting up camp.  Phunuru checked the loads and said that everything was accounted for.  He said there are only three teams of Sherpa at base camp now. We plan to head in to base camp tomorrow morning.

Mike Hamill reports that the team finished up their acclimatization day in Nyalam with some fun with the local fashion.   Today they were back on the road, for a spectacular drive from Nyalam up and over the Tsong La pass and down to the Tingri plains and the old town of Tingri  (4,348m/14,268ft).  From the pass they had nice views of Shishapangma, and from near Tingri they got their first views of Cho Oyu and Everest.  When they see those big peaks everything starts to become very real!  The will spend two nights here, with more acclimatization hiking tomorrow before moving to Base Camp.  Tingri is an ancient village, linked to Namche Bazaar in the Khumbu (Nepal) by the trade route over the Nangpa La pass.  The Cho Oyu team’s route to Advanced Base Camp will take them quite close to this pass.  After  spending many nights in this town myself, over the years, my recollection is mainly about all the dogs!

Cho Oyu Climbers Enjoy Nyalam

Cho Oyu Climbers and Tibet Trekkers on hike above Nyalam (Mike Hamill)
Nyalam, Tibet (Mike Hamill)
Road from Zhangmy to Nyalam (John Race)

The Cho Oyu climbers and Tibet trekkers had a good drive yesterday from Zhangmu (2300m, 7500ft) up the deep canyon of the Bhote Kosi river gorge to Nyalam (3,750 m, 12,300 ft). This is a very steep and windy road, which has been improved a lot over the years. It is only 35km between the two towns, but there is a huge difference in the geography. Zhangmu is down in the sub-tropical forest zone, perched on a steep hillslope above the Friendship bridge. Nyalam is right on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, surrounded by mountain peaks, but the terrain is starting to open up. The team will spend two nights in Nyalam, for acclimatization.

Mike Hamill reports that today the team went for a nice hike up the valley towards Shishapangma south face BC and that everyone is healthy and acclimatizing well, and that the weather has been good. The plan for tomorrow is to continue on to Tingri, which will require them to cross the Tsong La (pass), at over 17,000 feet (this will give them their first big views of the Himalayas and the 8000m peak Shishapangma).

Cho Oyu Team Reaches Tibet

August 30, 2014

2014 IMG Cho Oyu team ready to depart KTM (Ang Jangbu)
Cho Oyu climbers cross landslide debris between Lamosangu and Baribise (Phunuru Sherpa)
Lake impounded by landslide into Kosi River (Phunuru Sherpa)

The IMG Cho Oyu climbers and sherpas crossed the Friendship Bridge, went through the Chinese immigration and customs, and are now in Tibet. It sounds like their 4am start paid off, as they were able to reach the landslide early enough to take the shortcut trail which crosses directly through the debris field where the road is being rebuilt (later in the day this route is closed by the Army to keep people away from the construction work). Phunuru was able to send some photos and Mike Hamill reports “the landslide was HUGE and there’s a lake behind it now. All the Sherpa are here. Everything is going smoothly so far. We’re moved in at Zhangmu planning to make the drive to Nyalam tomorrow”.

New Kilimanjaro (and Rainier) Trip Report!

August 29, 2014

“Every member of our Kili group summited, and we did so as a team, which made the experience even more special. There were challenging times but we got through it together...” – Steph Decker with her husband George on Uhuru Peak

“Every member of our Kili group summited, and we did so as a team, which made the experience even more special. There were challenging times but we got through it together…” – Steph Decker with her husband George on Uhuru Peak

We periodically have customers request to speak with some of our past clients about their experiences with us. International Mountain Guides’ customers are notoriously happy to tell others about their trips. We’re happy to provide references as much as possible. When Kira inquired about joining us for a climb of Kilimanjaro and wanted to chat with one of our Kilimanjaro Veteran’s before signing up, she may have gotten more than she asked for. Steph’s reference turned into a pretty comprehensive trip report on Kilimanjaro and a bit about Mt. Rainier as well. You can read the full trip report here. Enjoy!
