Climbing Kilimanjaro

February 9, 2016

Kilimanjaro from Shira Plateau - Dustin Balderach

Kilimanjaro from Shira Plateau – Dustin Balderach

Dustin checked in from Shira Plateau (12,000ft) on Kilimanjaro.  The Team continues to climb well!  The day began with a light breeze and mist but cleared up in the afternoon, making everything warm and providing great views of the mountain.

They are heading to bed early tonight because tomorrow is the up and down day.  The team will pass the Lava Tower (14,500ft) and head down to Barranco Camp (13,500ft).

All is well on Kili!

All Good In Aconcagua

A view towards the summit

A view towards the summit

Mike Hamill, Sara Cohen and Martin Lucero are heading up our last Aconcagua climb of the season.  Team (and luggage) has arrived in Mendoza, permits are in hand, gear checks done and it’s time to go. They drive to Penitentes on 9 February and will begin their 3 day trek to base camp on the 10th.  It’s show time.

Up on the hill currently, Luke, Nickel and Leandro report that all continues to go well.  Their carry to Camp 1 was completed on the 8th and they’re anticipating a move to C1 on the 9th.  Clear but a little ‘breezy’.  So far, so good.

Tye and crew are doing so well that it’s hard to keep up.  Paine Grande hut on Sunday and a super trek up the French Valley.  Then, it was off to Refugio Grey and Lago Grey with views of the terminus of the Grey Glacier and the icebergs.  They’re hoping weather allows a kayak trip Tuesday morning before their boat ride back to civilization.  Things have been going pretty darn well!!

Carstensz Pyramid (16,023ft / 4,884 m) lives up to the billing!

I had been listening to our IMG guides and clients talk about Carstensz for years now and we decided it was time for me to check it out and see what the excitement was.  The short answer is that it had all of the adventure and excitement that it had been rumored to provide…and then some!  As always, the trip starts with a great team, and for this trip I had a terrific group of people that were fun to travel with.   They knew when it was time to move yet also were aware that sometimes things can slow our progress down and force us to be patient.

Every turn along the way opened my eyes to something new and interesting.  Traveling through Timika, Indonesia is not quite a hot tourist destination, but is a very good place to access the mountain.  We spent several days there visiting the local sights.  Then, it was time to fly by helicopter to Nasidome at about 12,000 feet on the Plateau.   This is definitely the way to go!  After a couple acclimatization nights on the Plateau, and a nice acclimatization hike, we crossed over New Zealand Pass to the Yellow Valley where our Base Camp was located at about 13,700 feet.   The route from Nasidome was a rugged trek with a big variety of different terrain along the way.  From the lakes, soggy ground and green vegetation on the Plateau to the rock scrambling and alpine desert of New Zealand Pass, there was something new and unexpected around every corner.   Along the way we had great views of the north side of the Sudirman Range, and the rugged north faces of Ngga Pulu (4,863 m) and Sumantri (4,870 m).

The climb of Carstensz is a great test for mountaineers, and we were constantly offered different challenges to work through.  Starting in the dark, the route was a mix of rock scrambling to steep climbing.  We were glad to have the benefit of fixed ropes, but even with fixed ropes the notches along the ridge crest will keep you on your toes and make you concentrate.  The new Tyrolean traverse is a blast!  Plain and simple, this is a high wire walk with good protection to help your balance, with a couple thousand feet of air under you.  The other two notches that need to be crossed can be done using a mix of rope work and climbing.  Just don’t forget to breathe!

The weather was consistent with what I expected.  It rained hard at times, especially in the afternoon.  Mornings were generally good weather, so we started very early every day, with the goal to be back to camp before the rain started.  The views as you trek and climb on Carstensz are amazing.  My team did a great job at taking a minute to “stop and smell the roses.”  I mean that we took our time and made sure to look around and take in the tremendous views of the high glaciers and the jungle below.  Thought provoking is an accurate way to describe the climb of Carstensz.  What a wild part of the world!

If you are fit and have solid climbing skills, then by all means consider a climb of Carstensz Pyramid.  This place is truly one great adventure!  We are already working on our Autumn 2016 Carstensz trip and I am here to answer any questions that might come up if you are interested.

Bader Valley Is In The Books

Today was another great day. We did our best to beat the heat by getting up to the big rock lookout by 11:15. We hung out enjoying the views and had some lunch. Afterwards we cruised back to the Refugio for a beer/Coke. It’s too warm to really do a lot so a few went to the lake while others stayed inside during the heat of the day.

Tomorrow is the French Valley, a favorite of a lot of previous IMG Patagonia trekkers. The weather is going to change a bit over the next few days…we’ll see what that means when it gets here!

The first day on Kilimanjaro starts at the Park Entrance at 6,000ft and takes the Team up to Machame Camp at 10,000ft.  It is a pretty good day with altitude but feels great to stretch your legs and start trekking.

The team is quite strong and did well today.  Dustin reported a few early morning clouds which kept things cool.  By the time they reached camp, the mountain started coming out to give them a first look.

“Camp looks fantastic and we had a great spaghetti dinner tonight!”  Tomorrow, the team will leave the forest behind and head to Shira Plateau.

A Nice Walk Through Moshi

Dustin just checked in from Moshi.  All climbers and gear checks are complete.  “We are ready to get started on our climb tomorrow morning!”

The group did gear checks this morning and had a nice walk through Moshi.  An early dinner and a brief of what to expect tomorrow when the Team gets to the gate.  The start of the Kilimanjaro climb is pretty fun.  Everyone gets to the gate, checks in and meets the rest of the staff.

Our first climb of 2016 is ready to go!

It’s Too Hot

February 5, 2016

Hey Phil,

Another great day! We made our way from Refugio Chileno to Refugio Los Cuernos today. It was another beautiful day! Hot this afternoon, thankfully we pulled into the Refugio in just about 5 hours, avoiding the sun in the afternoon.

We’re all settled in to our room. Some are napping while others went down to the rocky beach of Lago Nordenskjold. On the menu tonight is pescado con arroz (fish with rice).

After dinner we’ll head down to the lake and enjoy the sunset. Tomorrow is the Bader Valley. It’s a tough day but the views are worth it.

Since it’s an out and back day a few folks might hang back here and relax, which is a pretty good option. No better place to hang out and read a book if you ask me!

More tomorrow…

Heard from Tye and our Patagonia team yesterday afternoon. Sounds like they’re having way too much fun.

Hey Phil,

Another great day in Torres del Paine! Clear skies and just a heck of a day on the trail. We all went as far as Japanese Camp then a few continued up to the big lookout in the Silence Valley.

Tomorrow is a relatively easy day, which will be nice after a couple tough days. We’ll head primarily downhill and over to Refugio Los Cuernos. The forecast looks good for tomorrow.

I could keep typing but you and anyone reading this blog post has already skipped ahead to the photos!

Bottom-line is we’re having a blast!

Crystal Mountain Backcountry Skiing is Primo

Crystal Mountain Backcountry

Crystal Mountain Backcountry

“ I went out skiing with Amy and Clay today in the Crystal Mountain area and had a blast. Great skiers/riders and great snow conditions. We got in two laps on East Peak in storm conditions with about a foot or so of new snow, and were bummed when the light started to fade signaling the end of our day. Conditions are primo right now, snow like this won’t last long.”
