IMG guide Phunuru Sherpa called on the sat phone from Machame Camp to report that the team had a very nice hike up through the forest today.  The weather was good and the team are all doing well.  They are now camped right at the treeline (about 9800 feet) with their first closeup views of Kilimanjaro.  Tomorrow is a shorter day  as they will climb up onto the Shira Plateau.

Andy and the Illimani Team moved from La Paz to Base Camp today.  This is a great drive and a move to one of the most beautiful Base Camps that I have ever visited.

Everyone is feeling great after a solid rest day in La Paz and have made the decision to strike while the iron is hot!  The Team is planning on heading to High Camp in the morning and taking a look at the route to the summit.  If everything looks good, they are going to go for it.

Breakfast at K’s Lodge (Photo: Phunuru Sherpa)

We received a call earlier from IMG Senior Guide, Phunuru Sherpa, who is leading our fourth Kilimanjaro climb and safari of the summer. Good news – all clients and luggage have arrived safe and sound in Moshi. Thats a fantastic way to start the trip!! Right now the group will be fast asleep recovering from their long flights over to Tanzania. Tomorrow is a fairly relaxing day for the crew. Breakfast, a group meeting to discuss the expedition, gear checks and finally a visit to the town of Moshi for some souvenir shopping and stocking up on any last minute supplies. Its a much needed rest day to finish recovering from the jet lag and get all the gear sorted. The day is full of excitement about the start of the climb. We wish them luck and look forward to following their progress.

A day and a half of sightseeing in Moscow and a final dinner together on Old Arbat Street and it was time to go their separate ways.  Everyone on top and everyone healthy and happy.  That’s the goal.

Mike sent a final parting photo from Red Square of St. Basil’s Cathedral.  Time to say good-bye to Russia and hello to home.

The Bolivia Team returned to La Paz this morning to do a little laundry, take a shower and get things ready for Illimani.  The Team will also have a farewell dinner for some of the gang who will not be continuing to Illimani.  Great trip so far with challenging conditions.  Way to go!

For the climbers staying for the Illimani extension, they will get a rest day tomorrow before heading towards one of the most beautiful Base Camps in the world.

Congratulations and way to go everyone!

Kili Team Enjoys the Serengeti

Mom showing the youngster how it’s done

Mom showing the youngster how it’s done

Calls from Kilimanjaro teams out on safari are always about the same.  “Wow.  Seeing everything.  Glad we got to fly out to the Serengeti.  Camps are cool.  Glad we did the climb first”.  Word from Charlotte and her last team is no different.  Some members are even signing up for a sunrise balloon ride over the Serengeti.  What can we say.

All’s good in Tanzania

Alps Classic Program Going Strong!

July 29, 2016

IMG Lead Guide Matt Farmer reports from Wengen, Switzerland on July 29:

Summit of the Monch
Summit of the Monch
Touring the Jungfraujoch
Touring the Jungfraujoch

“We had a good climb up the Monch yesterday…. The group really enjoyed the climb and the views. Mary reported  “we had a fantastic climb  up the Monch. I used all the skills I had trained for on this climb.”

Today we woke at 3 only to find strong winds from the north (30-40 km, gusting to 50) contra-indicating an ascent of the Jungfrau. After getting back up for the 6 am breakfast spirits are high while we are currently touring the Jungfraujoch. Most of the group is keen to go do the Rothorn via ferrata/traverse (a rock climb with fixed anchors and ladders, GD) to check out the (Eiger) Nordwand ambiance up close, and then meet back up with the hiking group.”

Tomorrow the group travels on to Chamonix, France for a tour of the town, a climb of Mont Blanc and the hiking group will explore the countryside.

Contingency days have been used up over in Russia.  Hiking, saunas, sightseeing and just plain enjoying the valley.  Moscow HO!

Mike sent this shot from up at the Cheget ski area, eating shashlik.  Life is tough.

Bolivia Team Summits Huayna Potosi

July 28, 2016

Climbing Huayna Potosi (Greg Vernovage)

Climbing Huayna Potosi (Greg Vernovage)

Just like that!  No wind on top and a great view from the summit.  No real surprises other than the decision making that goes into climbing a big mountain.  “It was icy in places and we had to work around and over a few ‘interesting’ crevasses.”  Andy said, “When in doubt, we put a few more ice screws in to make us feel more comfortable.”

That climb is sweet, we leave High Camp at night and can see the lights of El Alto and by sunrise, the jungle is beneath us to the east.  The Team is back at Base Camp and enjoying their success.  A good dinner tonight and an early bus ride back to La Paz in the morning.  We will get a summit photo from the Team when they get back to La Paz.

All is well in Bolivia!

These Bolivian mountains are impressive from all angles.  We start out at nearly 12,000’ at the beginning of the trip and the altitude does not let off the gas pedal at any point of the trip.  It is a great challenge.

For Andy and the Team, the next challenge was trekking from Huayna Potosi BC to High Camp at 14,700’.  It is not a technical climb to HC and the chance to see a Condor is higher on this day.  All is well at High Camp and Andy and the Team are going to have an early dinner and get some rest before climbing up one of the most exposed and beautiful summit ridges that I have seen.
