September 27, 2019

Barranco Camp with the Breach Wall and Icicle above (Eric_Simonson)

IMG Guide, Harry Hamlin, called on the sat phone to report that the Kili team had a gorgeous day today, with great views.  They ascended from their camp by the Shira Plateau all the way up to Lava Tower (over 14,600 ft) before dropping down into the Great Barranco (deep valley) and to the Barranco Camp (about 13,000 ft).  Along the way they saw some of the giant groundsels and lobelias which only live at high altitude in the tropics.  In the evening it’s fun to hike away from camp a little, and look down on to lights of Moshi and to the plains of Africa beyond, as the Southern Sky emerges.

Everyone is doing well and looking forward to the climb up the Barranco Wall tomorrow and then traversing around to the Karanga Valley and camp.

IMG Sherpa returning to Base Camp on Putha Hiunchuli (Karma Rita Sherpa)
Yaks at ABC (Dallas Glass)

We heard from the teams on Cho Oyu and Putha Hiunchuli overnight. IMG Senior Guide, Phunuru Sherpa, reported that the mountain is clear and everything is packed at ABC. The Yaks will arrive early tomorrow morning and the team will pack and descend to Tingri before continuing onto Kyirong. From there, the team will cross the border and finish the journey back to Kathmandu.

Over on Putha Hiunchuli in Western Nepal, IMG Senior Guide, Karma Rita, checked in to let us know the Sherpa climbed to Camp 1 to secure the campsite while the members stayed at base camp getting acclimatized and organized. The team will have another rest day tomorrow and also have the Puja. Everything is working out well as there is still some lingering weather moving through from the remainder of the monsoon.

All is well on Cho Oyu and Putha Hiunchuli!

They had a nice hike today up through the giant heather plants, arriving at the camp in time for lunch.  They had a bit of rain this afternoon and were in and out of the clouds, but later it cleared up and they got their first close up views of Kilimanjaro.  Tomorrow the plan is to continue on to Barranco Camp.  Way to go, team, you are getting up on the mountain now!

Base Camp with Putha Hiunchuli (Karma Rita Sherpa)
Base Camp on Putha Hiunchuli (Karma Rita Sherpa)

Karma Rita just called from base camp on Putha Hiunchuli (16,076’/4900m) to let us know the team has made it with all of their gear.  The trek to base camp took the team just over four hours and the team pulled in just as a little rain began to fall.  The rain stopped before dinner and the team will be settling in for the next couple of days.  Two full rest days at base camp will allow the team to become familiar with all of their gear, do some training and get some well deserved rest.  Next up will be the Puja!

All is well on Putha Hiunchuli!

More great news from the Sherpa Team as they managed to clear the entire mountain with the exception of 2 loads at Lake Camp which they will retrieve tomorrow. The team will dry gear and pack tomorrow and Yaks will arrive to ABC tonight for the departure the following day.  This has been a great season for IMG on Cho Oyu and our congratulations to all of the climbers and Sherpa! IMG senior guide Harry Hamlin called on the sat phone to report that the team had a nice hike today up through the forest to Machame Camp (about 9,800 ft). He says the team members are all doing well and everything is going smoothly. They had a little rain along the way, but it cleared up later in the day and now the weather is looking good. Machame Camp is located right at treeline, and tomorrow they will leave the trees behind and enter the drier “heath zone” with giant heather plants and other strange flora. So far so good!

September Kilimanjaro Climbers Ready to Go!

September 24, 2019

IMG senior guide Harry Hamlin reports from Moshi Tanzania that our September Kili team have all arrived with their luggage, and are doing well.  That’s the way we like to start a trip! Today they did gear checks and got their duffels packed and weighed. Then, they took a short drive to the city center for a stroll around downtown Moshi and a chance to see the local market and shops.

September Kilimanjaro team (Harry Hamlin)

The plan for tomorrow starts with a 7am breakfast and a 8am departure from the hotel, then an hour or so drive up to the Machame Gate trailhead (about 5800 ft). After going through the National Park permit formalities, they have a nice hike to look forward to, ascending up through the forest to the treeline. We’ll look forward to hearing from them tomorrow evening from the Machame Camp (about 9800 ft).

Putha Hiunchuli Team Ready to Move Up in the Morning

September 24, 2019

Kagkot (Pega Sherpa)

The Putha Hiunchuli Team found a cell phone signal in Kagkot and were able to get a few photos out. IMG Guide Pega Sherpa sent a message letting us know the team is doing well:

“We arrived at Kagkot on schedule with all of our luggage. Some parts of the trail were washed away by rivers and landslides, so we had to switch to a new trail which was much longer, especially in between (Dunai to Tarakot) and (Tarakot to Musikhola). There were also some small landslides on the trails half way to Kagkot where mules could not make it, so they moved through different trails. Two days of acclimatization here at Kagkot went great. We gained 500m elevation yesterday and today we gained 300m. We are all set to leave tomorrow toward Panjing Camp (13,780’/4200m) with the mules ready and healthy and strong team members.”
