Mt. Olympus Summer 2020!

November 22, 2019

Looking far up valley to the Blue Glacier (Austin Shannon)

Olympic National Park is a World Heritage Site, a designation that recognizes its beauty and diversity of ecosystems. Bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, it is home to the longest stretch of undeveloped coastline in the lower 48 states. Rising from the coast is an old growth rain forest system from which isolated snow clad peaks rise high above tree line. In the very midst of this lies Mt. Olympus, the crown jewel of the Olympic Peninsula. The mountain rises almost 8,000 vertical feet from the ocean, 30 miles distant. The climb of Mt Olympus starts up the Hoh River Valley, hiking for two days up past the tree line and into the alpine zone at the base of the Blue Glacier. The summit day involves non-technical glacier travel followed by a steep rocky ridge climb led and belayed by veteran IMG guides. A summit of Mt. Olympus is the perfect way to fully experience Olympic National Park and climb one of the great isolated peaks in the Pacific Northwest. Sign up today!

Why not start the new year off right by climbing one of the Seven Summits and finding out how you perform at 7000 meters? You may just look to Denali next! Climbing the ‘Seven’ is a great excuse to see the world – and it’s summer climbing season in Argentina, so let’s go!

Mongolia July 2020

November 21, 2019

Trekking to Base Camp with the Altai Range (Eric Simonson)

If you are looking for an off the beaten path destination, Mongolia is the place to go. Our Mount Khuiten (14,350’) and Peak Nairandal (13,714’) climb has been a huge success the past three years and we are looking forward to doing it again! The trip starts in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar where we will do a day of sightseeing before flying west to Bayan Olgii. From Olgii we drive overland across the steppes, traversing grasslands and rivers until we arrive at the Park Entrance where the Bactrian (2 hump) camels will be waiting to help us with our trek to the base of the Altai Mountains. The climb of Mount Khuiten is a blast. What an interesting area!

If you would like to enjoy more of the Mongolian culture and can spare a few more days, our Mount Khuiten Expedition perfectly coincides with the famous Naadam Festival that occurs each year just outside of Ulaanbaatar, making it easy to take in some traditional Mongolian horse racing, archery, and wrestling! And, if you need even more, we can also assist you to visit the Gobi Desert after the climbing portion of the expedition. If you have thought about Mongolia but can’t wrap your head around how to get there, get in touch with us and we can help make it happen! Kilimanjaro February 2020!

November 20, 2019

Kilimanjaro (Eric Simonson)

Join us this February for a trip to 3 degrees south of the Equator, where the weather is excellent and the wildlife viewing on the safari is fantastic. This is the peak of the famous “Migration” on the Serengeti and with millions of animals on the move, it is truly one of the great spectacles of the natural world!

IMG Senior Guide, Phunuru Sherpa

IMG Senior Guide, Phunuru Sherpa, is leading the trip. He has led three IMG Kilimanjaro trips this year (for a total of 14 ascents), was one of our leaders on our Everest expedition (12 ascents), led our Cho Oyu expedition this past autumn (his 19th ascent, which is the record). Most recently, he led the IMG Classic Team to the top of Ama Dablam (for his 13th summit). Additionally, Phunuru has trained with the NPS Climbing Rangers in Denali and Yosemite National Parks and is the lead instructor at the Khumbu Climbing Center in Nepal. Join him in February for a fun trip to Kilimanjaro!

Cotopaxi Summit Photos!

Climbing Cotopaxi (Rikki Dunn)
Climbing Cotopaxi (Rikki Dunn)
On the summit of Cotopaxi (Rikki Dunn)

The team’s recent summit of Cotopaxi was followed by a visit to a couple of haciendas, including the spectacular San Augustin.  They also visited the home of a famous Ecuadorian climber/guide/photographer and very dear friend – Jorge Anhalzer.  Romulo’s wife, Patricia entertained the team at their home and then it was time to get some of our members back to Quito and on flights home Monday.  They should be home later today.

Four members are staying with Rikki and Romulo and going to take a shot at Chimborazo.  This one a bit of a tougher challenge than Cayambe and Cotopaxi.  A lot depends on getting lucky… lucky with weather and lucky with the conditions on the mountain. We’d consider a summit of Chimborazo the real frosting on the cake but, regardless, it’ll be a good experience and a real challenge.  Let’s see!

Team got back down to the hut, packed and hiked to their bus. From there, it was maybe two hours, and they’d checked into their hotel and emailed us the news from lunch. I’m sure Rikki and Romulo will get some pics headed our way later. Until then, it’s time to eat.
