Moving to C2 on Aconcagua

February 6, 2020

Things continue to move along smoothly in South America.  Robert, Nate, Leo, and team are enjoying their approach hike into base camp on Aconcagua; no issues.

Rikki, Martin, and team are now at C2 and everyone’s doing well.  Plan is to carry to C3 tomorrow. Knock on wood – they are doing exceptionally well, and it’s getting close to game day.

Jonathan and his crew are just having fun down in Patagonia. Hope he’ll be able to get a photo or two out at some point. Pretty great scenery.

Bottom line – all is good in South America.

IMG Everest 2020 Preparations Under Way

February 4, 2020

We have been working hard on the upcoming 2020 IMG Everest expedition. This will be the 26th Everest expedition that IMG has organized, and we are happy to report that we have a great looking team of climbers and guides from 11 different countries.  Now we are working hard on the preparations for the upcoming Everest programs.

IMG Senior Guide Phunuru Sherpa returned to Nepal in early January from leading our Holiday trip to Kilimanjaro, and went straight back to his home in Phortse to begin organizing the Everest guides.  Phunuru reports that there has been a considerable amount of snow in the Khumbu this winter which is good for the mountain as well as the potatoes!  Up in Khumbu, Phunuru met with our team and has confirmed the staffing for the Everest expedition.  He also had a chance to train with some of our up and coming guides at the Khumbu Climbing School, where he was instructing.  Further up the Khumbu valley, Ang Karma and Sonam Tashi went to Everest Base Camp at the end of January to secure our 2020 camp site.  And, back in Kathmandu, Ang Jangbu and his team have packed up the first batch of loads and these have already been sent into Khumbu.

Here in the USA, our high altitude oxygen cylinders were inspected, refilled, shipped and yesterday they arrived back in Nepal.  Ang Jangbu and his team are now clearing them through Nepal customs and will then be repacking them for the trip to Base Camp.  Now we are assembling our big shipment of food and equipment which will also be airfreighted to Nepal in the coming weeks. We are getting ready!

South America Update

February 4, 2020

Patagonia team’s first dinner together – Jonathan Schrock

It’s early February so it must be time for more updates from South America!  Rikki and Martin and team are working on getting in their carry to C2 and then moving up and getting camp established.  They’re doing fine.

Robert, Nate, Leo and team are about ready to head to the mountain.  They’re our fourth and final Aconcagua team for the season.  Everything’s on schedule.

Also reporting in was Jonathan from Patagonia.  His trekking team is all together now in Puerto Natales, Chile – getting ready to take off on one of the coolest treks in South America.  Torres del Paine is – simply put – spectacular.  Beautiful scenery, nice huts, and low altitude makes for just a super trip.

Everyone’s where they’re supposed to be and healthy.  Couldn’t ask for more!

Aconcagua Team – Crushing It!

February 3, 2020

Trail to C1 (Rikki Dunn)

Carry to C1 at 16,200’ went well for Rikki and team on Sunday… real well. Rikki said the team ‘crushed it’ and the plan is to move up to C1 on Monday. Nice!

The good life at base camp (Rikki Dunn)

Robert, Nate and Leo report that everyone on their team is in Mendoza with all their luggage and none the worse for wear from the long flights! I swear – that’s half the battle. Shopping is done and they’ll be making their way to Penitentes to begin the trek to base camp shortly. Always good to hear!

Aconcagua Trips are Underway!

January 31, 2020

Our last two Aconcagua trips for the season are underway. Rikki, Martin and crew are working their way up to base camp. All pretty straightforward and that’s just fine. We’re OK with boring! They haven’t been able to get any new photos out yet, but we’ll post the one of the team jumping in the van and heading for the trailhead. Also on Aconcagua is Robert, Nate and Leo. They’re meeting their team this weekend, basically a week behind Team 3.

Heading for the Trailhead

We should also check in with Jonathan Schrock. He stayed in South American after his Vinson trip and is picking up his Patagonia trek in a couple of days. That’ll be fun for him, as well as for the team. What can we say – all’s just fine south of the border.

On the Road to Penitentes
On the Road to Penitentes
Dinner in Mendoza-Rikki Dunn

Time to send off another Aconcagua expedition for the season!

Rikki Dunn and Martin Lucero have met the team, shopped, finished packing and are already in Penitentes. They are ready to begin the approach to base camp tomorrow. Three days of walking and they’ll be at 13,600’;  that’s when things get serious and the real work begins.

We’ll follow the crew as they work their way up through three additional camps before taking a shot at the summit.  Aconcagua is a tough one.  Here’s wishing them good health and a little luck!

Vinson Update

January 22, 2020

IMG Vinson team – January 2020 (Jonathan Schrock)

Let’s say congratulations, once last time, to our Vinson team and wish them all an easy flight home, except Jonathan. Guide, Jonathan Schrock, heads to Puerto Natales to meet our Patagonia trekking group. FUN duty for him. Things could not have gone any sweeter on Vinson and we’re already looking ahead towards next season. With that in mind, we’ll be offering the same departures and the same guides on each trip next season. Why mess with success? Same great lead guides, same departure dates, same price, same degree of success and fun.  An expedition to Vinson Massif is just too exciting and too unique to miss. We’ll see you next season. Be there.

Ecuador Update

January 22, 2020

Chimborazo (Jay Lyons)

Jay and Romulo called in from Ecuador a bit ago. Close but no cigar was the message. Guys worked HARD but the summit was not to be.  Chimborazo is a big, physically demanding mountain. Sometimes discretion is the better part of valor. Good news – everyone’s down and with 10 fingers and toes. No guts, no glory and you guys took a serious run at this thing. They’ll now enjoy the last of their time in Ecuador and everyone will be heading home shortly.

Ecuador has become a hugely popular trip for IMG and rightly so. The mountains, country and people are sensational. And IMG’s Romulo Cardenas is as good as they come. After working with two IMG groups and an IMG Custom trip in the last couple of months, he’s deserving of a break. I now probably have to bring him up here this spring to work on his water skiing. Regardless, he will be ready and raring to go with all our groups again next season. And thanks to the IMG guides who join Romulo each season who go down because they love the trip as much as our IMG climbers do.

Thanks, Romulo, Rikki, Jay, and to all our climbers.  Nicely done!
