After their successful climb of Ixtaccihuatl IMG leader Porter McMichael checked in to report that the team had a nice overnight break in the old colonial city of Puebla.  They strolled the central square and visited the 16th Century Puebla Cathedral, a world heritage site.  Then they moved on to Tlachichuca, a small farming town at 9500 ft and the jumping off spot for Orizaba climbers. To climb Pico de Orizaba (also known as Citlaltépetl) the team will take a rugged 4WD truck ride up to the climber camp at Piedra Grande refugio, about 14,000.ft.

Orizaba (5636 m/ 18,491′) is the highest mountain in Mexico and the third highest in North America (after Denali in Alaska and Mt Logan in Canada).  From Piedra Granda the team will ascend a steep rocky trail to the Jamapa Glacier, which can be icy with crevasses.  We’ll keep you posted on their progress!

IMG Mexico volcanoes team ready for Ixta (Zach Moore)

Iztaccíhuatl from Amecameca showing the knees route from the right

IMG senior guide Porter McMichael reports that the team moved up on Sunday to La Joya, near to the Paso de Cortes, and in the afternoon they took another nice acclimatization hike, ascending several thousand feet on the slopes of Ixta.  Today they will do a final acclimatization hike and then this afternoon they’ll work on getting prepared for a very early morning start, in the dark.  Tomorrow will be a big day, as they climb to over 17,000 feet on the 8th highest mountain in North America.  Ixta is sometimes referred to as “the sleeping woman” since the profile of the mountain shows the head,  chest, knees, and feet, and the climbing route ascends via the “knees”.

Mexico Climbers Start Acclimatizing

Nov 6, 2022 – IMG senior guide Porter McMichael checked in to report that the IMG Mexico volcanoes expedition has begun! The climbers all arrived yesterday, on schedule with their luggage, to Mexico City (about 7300 feet). After a night in the city, today the team moved up to Amecameca which is about 1000 feet higher. This afternoon they went for a nice acclimatization hike on the slopes above in Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl National Park. They said the hiking was great, but clouds prevented from seeing the volcanoes.
