Elbrus Team Arrives In St. Petersburg

July 15, 2013

St Isaac's Cathedral (photo: Viki Tracey)

Elbrus season is upon us.  What better way to start than by sending the man who literally wrote the book on the Seven Summits over as lead guide.  Mike Hamill has a full IMG crew who just arrived in St. Petersburg to begin the first trip of the season.  Mike reports that everyone got in without issue and that all’s well.  Sightseeing was the project of the day with St. Isaacs Cathedral, the Fortress of Peter and Paul, a little late afternoon cruise on the canals of St. Petersburg – you know, all the usual ‘tourist’ stuff.  It would be crazy to be in Russia and not see all we can.  They’re out early tomorrow for Mineranye Vody and about a 4 hour drive to the village of Terskol.

Meanwhile, On The Serengeti…

July 15, 2013

Cats

Safari has begun.  About a 50 minute flight took the crew out to the Serengeti.  Fun to see the terrain from the air on the way in and drive across it on the way out.  Anyhow, Sheldon’s comment was “tons of cats eating different things”.  Those things, of course, being other animals.

When she called, they were sitting out by the campfire.  Life is tough.

Denali: Check!

July 14, 2013

Happiness is Denali in your rear view mirror.  Actually, that’s not entirely true.  There are some mountains you want to ‘have climbed’.  There are other mountains that you truly want to climb.  Denali falls in the latter category.  The Alaska Range is special and spending time on Denali is always a thrill.

Greg was super proud of his team. As he said, “ to the very end of the trip, they worked together with and for each other.”

The guys are all home now.  One adventure ends and the next one begins.  Wonder where they’ll end up next?

100% Summit On Kili

July 13, 2013

Looking down on Mawenzi (photo: Ken Maclaurin)

Sheldon call at 1 a.m. Pacific time this morning to tell that 100% of the team were standing on the summit of Kilimanjaro.  And, that included her mom!

Still lots of works remains.  About 3 hours for the descent to Barafu camp, some repacking, clothes changing and lunch, and then it’s time to begin the descent to Mweka Camp.  Not easy to rally at that point.  It’s hard to put the packs back on and continue the hike.  But it’s important.  Each foot down means thicker air, more strength and less possibility of altitude related issues.  Everything’s better down low.  Mweka is at 10,000 ft. and the Park sells beer and Coke.  Believe me, it’s worth the effort to get down.

Denali Team Standing By To Fly

July 12, 2013

Denali strip. (Heli Suokko)

The call came from Greg this morning to tell us that the crew is back safe and sound at the Upper Strip on Denali.  Weather should permit a flight out, soon.  The crew will be flying with Talkeetna Air Taxi and that first glimpse of green is always pretty sweet.  They’re at the Upper Strip because the Lower Strip often gets too rutted out and even has a couple of crevasses as we get later into the season, especially when the weather’s been particularly hot.

The team will be staying in Talkeetna at the Talkeetna Motel tonight, checking out with AMS and the National Park and doing a little gear sort and repack.  A shower (or 2) is likely in order as well as a few serious meals and the requisite drinks.  Maybe the evening spent in the Fairview Inn, celebrating their success.  Priceless.

Leaving For The Summit At Midnight

Kili at night. (Photo by Andrew Carafelli)

June 12, 2013

“At Barafu.  Weather’s fine and everyone doing well, and my mom’s killing it.  Leaving for the summit at midnight.”

I love Sheldon’s calls – right to the point and everything we need to know.

Kili Team Settled At Karanga Camp

July 11, 2013

Kili in the clouds (photo: Ken Maclaurin)

“Team doing great.  Nice day going into Karanga camp.  Chicken with fries for dinner.  Weather still nice.”  This was the conversation I just had with IMG Senior Guide, Sheldon Kerr, from Karanga Camp at around 13,500’ on the slopes of Kilimanjaro.  That’s pretty much all we need to know.  Oh yah, Sheldon’s mom yelled from the background saying that she was doing great, too!

Kili Team Up to 14,500ft.; Sleeping At 13,000ft.

Climbing the Barranco Wall (Eben Reckord)

Short and to the point sat phone call from Sheldon today.  The team completed their climb up to 14,500’ and then headed down to the Baranco Camp at 13K.  Weather good, everyone feeling well so no issues.  That’s all we needed to hear.

Tomorrow is Karanga Camp.  The morning starts off with the Baranco Wall.  It’s a 2 hour hike/scramble up good rock with sensational views.  Looks intimidating from camp but only fun once people are on it.  Karanga Camp is close to 13K feet, too.  Some folks skip this camp and head straight to high camp at Barafu.  Why do that?  Adding an extra day gives our teams an extra day of acclimatization, breaks up an otherwise long day and allows us to arrive at high camp quite early in the day and not be unduly tired.

I’d call tomorrow ‘hump day’ as far as the climb’s concerned.  Once they reach Karanga, attention will be focused on that summit and no longer on the approach.  So far, so good.

Denali Team Heading For The Barn

July 10, 2013

Heading for the barn. (Heli Suokko)

Greg called in yesterday evening.  They were able to get high camp cleaned up and packed up and then worked their way back down the West Buttress and descended the fixed ropes from 16K down to 15K and completed the descent to the 14K camp.  14K was a nice place to spend the night.  Today, they’ll work their way down past Windy Corner, past Squirrel Hill, down Motorcycle Hill and into the 11K camp.  The team will likely brew up a hot drink and a quick meal prior to continuing their descent to the Northeast Fork of the Kahiltna Glacier at about 7800’.  They’ll spend a quick night here to let the lower Kahiltna freeze up as much as possible and the team will make the last 5 hours of descent to the landing strip when conditions are as cold as possible.

No celebrating yet.  Two days of care and work still need to be completed.

All Is Well At Shira Camp

July 9, 2013

How's this for a view from camp? (photo: Ken Maclaurin)

12,500 ft at Shira Camp on the Shira Plateau.  Good day had by all.  They’re getting higher now but everyone seems to be handling the altitude well.  Sheldon’s voice message was short and sweet – Shira with everyone and everyone doing fine.  That works for us.

Tomorrow is up, around and down.  They’ll reach 14,500’ and end up at 13,000’ – Baranco Camp.  As much as you hate losing altitude, it’s just what the doctor ordered – climb high, sleep low.
