Everyone Is On The Move!

October 28, 2014

Everyone checked in this morning!

Stay with me here….Mark checked in from Yak Camp this morning.  All is well and the Team is climbing well and working together.  They will touch Camp 1 tomorrow and head back down.

Mike Hamill is at Camp 1 and will touch Camp 2 and return to Ama Dablam Base Camp tomorrow as well.

Josh checked in from Ama Dablam Base Camp and will head up on their Camp 2 rotation in the morning.

Phunuru also called and said that everything is going as planned with logistics, and he and the Sherpa team are having a good time and are impressed with all of the climbers.

It is always nice to hear from the Teams and get some laughter over the phone.  Mark said that the weather has been just great.  Beautiful days and a ton of stars at night.

Tye Chapman checked in from Dzongla.  Great tea house!  Of course, they dropped in altitude and will get a good night sleep.  The 3 x 3 Team made a stop at Lobuche Base Camp to say hello to our Lobuche Climbing Team and see what the set up looked like.  They will continue up valley tomorrow to Thagnak.

Our Lobuche Climbing Team will do fixed line training tomorrow at Lobuche Base Camp and will take some rest.  The following day will take them to High Camp and line them up for a summit bid of Lobuche!

Beautiful Day On Kala Pattar & Ama Dablam C1

October 27, 2014

All is well in the Khumbu!

Camp 1 on Ama Dablam (Justin Merle)

Camp 1 on Ama Dablam (Justin Merle)

Ama Dablam climbers are spread out low on the mountain.  Some are sleeping at Camp 1 and others at Yak Camp tonight.  The ropes are being fixed as well.  I spoke with Mark at Base Camp and he sad that the Team is in great shape and everyone is healthy.  Our Sherpa Team has been setting up camp and preparing for the move up to Camp 2 and 2.7.  Internet and cell signal seems to be the most challenging obstacle so far.

Phunuru was able to sneak out a Team photo from the Puja.  I am not sure what Phunuru’s secret is but he always seems to find the lucky spot.  Thanks Phunuru!

Up Valley, Tye checked in from Gorakshep and Lobuche.  That Team is strong and moving!  They had a great trek up to the summit of Kala Pattar.  To keep with the theme for this Team of 3 x 3 Trekkers and Lobuche Climbers, the weather was superb.  A little cool in the morning as they climbed and when the sun came up, great views.  After the summit of Kala Pattar, the 3 x 3 and Lobuche climbers make a split.  Our 3 x 3 Team is spending the night in the village of Lobuche while the Lobuche climbers trekked around to Base Camp.

Coming up for the Teams, training for the Lobuche climb and trekking towards Gokyo!

Carstensz Pyramid Summits!

October 27, 2014

Dan called from the summit of Carstensz Pyramid!  “100% on top!  Great day with fantastic views.”

The route was in great shape.  The snow that fell the day before was still there and made the route challenging.  The ropes were in great condition and the team worked together.  “This Team is extremely strong and work well together,” Dan said.  Round trip summit day was 12 hours.  No rain for the whole day.

They took plenty of time on top taking photos that we will share after they get back to Jayapura.

Way to go Carstensz Team!

Carstensz Base Camp!

October 26, 2014

All is well at Carstensz Pyramid!  Dan checked in to let us know that all of the mud boots are working correctly and they are strong and ready to roll.  “A little snow last night just below 14,000 feet, it looks like,” Dan let me know immediately on the phone.  When you go to Carstensz, you are bound to get a little precipitation from day to day.  So far, the team has not been let down.  A couple afternoon clouds and some precipitation at night but nothing that they don’t expect.

Today, they are on the trail.  Pack up and head over New Zealand Pass where their high point of the day will be 14,500 feet as they go through the pass.  Dan is hoping the snow sticks around, it might make travel a little better.  After crossing over the pass, the Team will drop down and head to Carstenz Base Camp.  Base Camp elevation is 13,700 feet.

They are working hard to put themselves in position to summit!

Busy Days In The Khumbu Valley

October 26, 2014

It has been a busy couple of days in the Khumbu Valley.

Ama Dablam Puja (Justin Merle)

Ama Dablam Puja (Justin Merle)

The Ama Dablam Team had their Puja ceremony this morning and has begun moving up Ama Dablam.  The first group of climbers moved up to Yak camp today, where they will familiarize themselves with the route and continue to acclimatize higher up.  Our second group will meet them at Yak camp tomorrow.  After a night at Yak Camp, the team will touch and go back down to camp 1.

Up the Valley, the 3 x 3 and Lobuche climbing Team has had a very busy couple of days.  Tye reported from Lobuche Village that it was a long day with slippery conditions on the trail.  “Slippery” is a technical term for us.  There was a little snow encountered on the trail over Khnongma La.  A little education here: “La” means pass, so when you read “La” at the end of the name, it is letting you know that they are passing through a high pass or notch in the mountain range.  The Team worked hard and was on the trail for a while yesterday.  Once again, why hurry, the views in all direction are worthy of a stop and soak in the landscape.  Some Tea and dinner and a good night sleep in Lobuche was well earned.

Everest Base Camp (Tye Chapman)

Not enough they say!  The 3 x 3 and Lobuche Team woke up and had recuperated.  One of the Highlights of the trip was within their reach.  Out the door and up the hill.  The Team headed for Gorakshep.  From there, grab some lunch and visit Everest Base Camp.  Some fresh snow on the ground made for great trekking conditions.

Tomorrow, the team will split. After climbing Kala Pattar, the Lobuche Climbers will head to Base Camp and the 3 x 3 trekkers will continue up to Dzongla.

Nice Day At Nasidome

October 25, 2014

Nasidome (Jason Edwards)

Nasidome (Jason Edwards)

Dan checked in from Nasidome.  The team landed and had camp set up, and they are doing well with the altitude.  They were dropped off at 11,900 feet according to the altimeter in the Helicopter.  They had a good day familiarizing themselves with the area.  A good acclimatization hike with the mud boots.  They are eating well and are staying pretty dry in the tents.

Tomorrow, they are headed to Base Camp!

All Is Well In Nasidome!

October 24, 2014

Dan called on in from Nasidome!  All three flights made it in with all the gear. The Carstensz Team is doing great and are relieved to have preceded the rain clouds.  They arrived in Nasidome this morning where the tents were already up.  This is huge!  With the constant threat of rain coming in, it is a great feeling to have the heli flight in under their belt.

Nasidome (Dan Zokaites)

They can now focus on trekking to Base Camp and climbing. The rest of the day will be spent organizing loads and eating.  They flew in to about 12,000 feet at Nasidome so they key is to take it easy and not over exert themselves.  Stay ahead of the altitude curve.

Tomorrow, the Team will pack up and take the hike up to Base Camp.  Time to put on the mud boots!

Way to go Carstensz Pyramid Team!

Chukkung Ri Summits/Rest Day On Ama Dablam

October 24, 2014

3 x 3 and Lobuche Peak Team summits Chukkung Ri (Tye Chapman)

3 x 3 and Lobuche Peak Team summits Chukkung Ri (Tye Chapman)

Tye checked in with news of a great day on Chukkung Ri!

It was a good day with some hard climbing for the team as they crossed 5,000 meters.  The Team did great and the weather was perfect.  They were rewarded for their hard work with continued fantastic views of the North Ridge of Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Island Peak and Everest.

Climbing Chukkung Ri (Tye Chapman)

When you start gaining more altitude and look around, it is surreal for a while. We have a tendency to concentrate so hard on the task at hand that we forget to look around and take in the landscape and the enormity of what is in front of us.

All is well with the Team. They will get a good night sleep tonight. They will need it, tomorrow is an early start, Tye said the wakeup call is for 5 am.  Tomorrow, they will trek over Khongma La.  In Jangbu’s words, “Long day but great views, so it will be good.”

On Ama Dablam, the Team is resting and preparing for the Puja.  Mike, Mark and Phunuru spoke with the fixing team and have word that they will put the rope up today and tomorrow.

Mike has climbed up to Yak camp for the night and Mark and his Team are taking a rest day.  I know this Ama Dablam Team.  They started out the day with coffee and tea and by lunch, I bet Mark had his harness out and was showing a few things that will help the team be more efficient up high.  Mark is a wealth of knowledge and knows how to explain different techniques extremely well.  The dining tent probably turned into a get together between the Sherpa and climbers.

What a great way to connect!

It’s official.  The first real snow of the season has hit Paradise Meadows on Rainier.  And while some Seattleites may by whining about the recent rains, those of us who live for the mountains know what this means…Winter Is Here!

Mt Rainier with a fresh coat of paint, in it’s perfect winter white
The Jackson Visitors Center at Paradise sees its first dusting of winter snow for the season.
The Tatoosh Range looking majestic with new snow.

This is a time to be celebrated! It’s a time to lather a fresh coat of wax on the skis.  Blow the dust off the goggles.  Put on old ski movies.  And of course watch the weather like a hawk. With each passing storm local skiers and riders count every inch of snow, waiting patiently for the first turns of the season.

With the highest winter trailhead just down the road from our office door, we here at IMG are celebrating the onset of winter.  The excitement in the air is palpable. Come join us for one of our winter programs, including Avalanche Courses, Backcountry Skiing/Riding, and Winter Expedition Seminars.

New for this winter:
Backcountry Touring Seminar:  Moving from the ski area to the backcountry.  This course will focus on skills needed to become a competent backcountry skier or rider, including an AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Course.
Mt Rainier Ski Traverse:  Experience Mt Rainier in one of the most unique ways imaginable: on skis during the winter.  Our team will traverse Mt Rainier from Paradise to the Carbon River around the east side of the mountain.
AIARE Level 1 Avalanche Courses:  With classroom time hosted at the Outdoor Research Building in Seattle and field sessions on Mt Rainier.  This is an excellent course for those winter recreationist looking for avalanche education.

Here’s to a great winter!

Ama Dablam Base Camp And Chukkung

October 23, 2014

Mike Hamill called in this morning to let us know that Mark and the Ama Dablam Team has arrived at Base Camp.  All is well, Base Camp is looking great, and the Team is psyched!  Word is that the rope and hardwear has arrived and the fixing team will start work on the mountain as weather permits.  Mike will hike to Yak Camp tomorrow and Mark and the rest of the team will take a rest day and familiarize themselves with their Base Camp duffel again.

The IMG Team will have their Puja on the 25th and then will focus in on the task in front of them – climbing!

Tye Chapman called in as well from Chukkung.  The 3 x 3 and Lobuche climbing Team are doing great and the accommodations are fantastic.  It was a clear day and arriving in Chukkung has been amazing, Tye said. “We are in a big bowl up here”.  They have Lhotse towering above them and Island Peak with Makalu in the distance.  All with a post cyclone dusting of snow on them and crisp air.  Tomorrow, the Team will climb Chukkung Ri.  I am guessing that they will get more spectacular views.
