Aconcagua Team Summits

January 11, 2015

Summit

Summit

Great news from Argentina this morning.  Josh McDowell and team all stood on the summit of Aconcagua.  Clear with very light wind.  Pretty much the perfect day for a hard climb.  Congratulations to all.  They still have two big work days to get back to Mendoza.

Third IMG group of the season is arriving Mendoza today.  Josh Tapp and his crew will all be in town today.  They’ll spend two nights in Mendoza working on food shopping and packing prior to heading towards the mountain.  Forecast is for several more days of nice weather.

Vinson, Aconcagua & Ecuador Updates

January 10, 2015

Luke’s team on the equator
Acclimatization hike on Cuicocha

As usual at this time of year, it’s busy for IMG trips abroad. Let’s go through the list and get everyone updated before the Seahawks game later today!

Vinson teams have said hello and good-bye at 80 degrees South. Greg Vernovage, Mike Hamill and team flew off the afternoon of the 9th. The plane which came in to pick them up carried Aaron Mainer and his team. These flights were exactly on schedule which isn’t always the case in Antarctica. Our luck continues to hold. Greg’s team is flying home today and Aaron’s crew is likely making their first carry of the expedition. All is good.

Josh McDowell and his crew just called in from high camp on Aconcagua. We shared some weather forecast notes and their plan is to make a summit attempt in the morning. The crew is doing well and ready to take a shot. Big day tomorrow for them. No precipitation is forecast and the winds should stay within a reasonable range.

Josh Tapp and team are on their way to Mendoza, arriving tomorrow. IMG Argentine guide, Martin Lucero, will put his boots back on and join them for his second climb of the season.

Down in Ecuador, Luke Reilly and team are in the town of Otavalo today. It’s market day and you don’t want to miss this famous event while in Ecuador. We’re still missing a couple of bags but hope to see those back at the hotel in Quito later today.

Lots going on but all’s positive.

Vinson Teams Coming And Going

January 9, 2015

Taking the tour around Punta Arenas before their flight to Antarctica.

Taking the tour around Punta Arenas before their flight to Antarctica.

We’re waiting for final word but signs were saying yes to a morning flight from Punta Arenas, Chile to the Ice.  That flight will carry IMG Senior Guide, Aaron Mainer and his team TO the Ice and pick up Greg Vernovage, Mike Hamill and their team and get them OFF the Ice.  Greg’s team will be anxious to fly home after another 100% successful expedition while Aaron’s team will be chomping at the bit to ‘get at it’.  It’s been a good season for IMG on the Ice.  Aaron knows Vinson well and is looking forward to showing his team the summit.

UPDATE (11:00am): The plane is flying.

Aconcagua Team 1 Wrapped; Team 2 At Camp 2

January 8, 2015

IMG_0279-(2)s

Clean up and wrap up is done for Peter Adam’s team.  Members had a nice final dinner and are on their way home.  Congratulations, again, to all.

Josh McDowell just called in from Camp 2.  Still windy but all is good.  The team hunkered down and still looking to make a carry tomorrow to Camp 3.  Camp 3 is high camp.  We’re watching forecasts and starting to strategize about the schedule for a summit push.  Josh, Cedric and Leandro are watching the weather and keeping tabs on how the team members are doing.  Part science and part art.  Throw in a little luck, too.  The bottom line is they’re trying to get the team into position to take advantage of the weather when it’s favorable.  So far, so good.

Rest Day For Aconcagua Team

January 6, 2015

Mountain shadow

Mountain shadow

Josh McDowell just checked in from Camp 1 on Aconcagua.  No carry today up higher.  They awakened to pretty good winds and fresh snow.  To quote Josh – ‘looked like it was rippin’ up higher’.  Logical choice was to take a rest day.  That never hurts with the acclimatization, regardless.  They’ll carry tomorrow if conditions allow.  Regardless, everyone is doing well and ready to keep pushing when conditions permit.

Vinson Team Living Large

January 6, 2015

Sue's Pyramid

Sue’s Pyramid

Just spoke with Greg Vernovage down on the Ice.  Yesterday was a big day.  The team went down from high camp, all the way to Vinson base camp. Then, they were fortunate to be able to fly over to Union Glacier late last evening.  Now, they’re ‘living large’ at Union Glacier.  Life there is amazingly ‘cush’ as compared to life at high camp.  What a difference a day makes.

It’s simply a matter now of waiting until the weather clears for the flight to Chile.  Tentative date for that flight is 9 Jan.  That’s when our final team of the season will fly on.  All’s good on the Ice.

Patagonia Team Wraps It Up

The team getting their pre-kayaking instruction

The team getting their pre-kayaking instruction

So, the crew had hoped to hop on the Grey II for the trip down Lago Grey yesterday.  Best laid plans…. A big wind storm rolled in making the boat trip unsafe.  Nice thing was that the wind was at their backs when they headed down the trail to the Refugio Paine Grande and jumped on the catamaran there. As one of our trekkers put it – “free trekking”.  Now, that’s what I call turning lemons into lemonade.

They had dinner in Puerto Natales at the Cormoran de las Rocas last night.  Heading now to Punta Arenas for flights home.  Next trip, led by Chris Meder, heads out 1 February.

Technical Training In Ouray

January 5, 2015

IMG guide Mark Allen send a couple of photos today from a private training group.  Mark’s team is practicing skills related to future expedition climbing, specifically ascending and descending fixed lines with a mechanical ascender.  The team spent today on Dexter Slabs, a natural ice formation outside of the Ouray Ice Park.  Conditions look great!

All Is Well In The Southern Hemisphere

January 5, 2015

The holiday season is over so let’s catch up with all the comings and goings for IMG teams around the world.

The boat ride home

The boat ride home

Tye Chapman called in yesterday to say the group had a super day kayaking amongst the icebergs in Lago Grey and that everyone’s excited about their boat ride down the lake this morning and back to ‘civilization’.  That said, two nights at Refugio Grey can hardly be called roughing it.  One final night in Puerto Natales and they’ll be on their way home.  All’s good in Patagonia.

Greg Vernovage called in yesterday, too – from the SUMMIT of Vinson Massif.  All members were standing on top of the bottom of the world. They’ve got a big move today to get all the way down to base camp.  Nice part is that it’s all downhill.  They’ll then fly to the Union Glacier as soon as possible and will be waiting there for the IL76 flight back to Chile.  That flight is scheduled for the 9th, weather permitting.  Our fourth and final trip for the season, under the leadership of IMG Senior Guide, Aaron Mainer, will be flying in on that same flight.  They’ll have time to shake hands as they pass each other on the way to/fr the airplane.  All’s good on the Ice.

News is also good on Aconcagua.  Peter Adams called yesterday to let us know they had a relatively warm day to SUMMIT Aconcagua.  Aconcagua is a very physically demanding climb, more than most people realize, and anyone who summits can be justly proud of the effort and persistence shown to reach the summit.  Well done, team.  They move today down to Plaza Mulas.  That’s base camp on the Horcones Valley side of the mountain.  One long, final hike on Tuesday and they’ll likely push straight to Mendoza that same evening.  Steak and wine for all.

Josh McDowell’s team on Aconcagua reported in with a strong carry to C1.  Plan is for them to move up to C1 today.  Forecast remains for clear skies, right into the weekend.

It’s been a safe and successful holiday season for IMG teams abroad.

2015 Update From IMG Teams Abroad

January 2, 2015

Let’s get caught up with the action over the holidays!  First, Team Taylor got home in time to celebrate New Year’s back in the States.  Meanwhile, Greg Vernovage and team flew onto the Ice and got shuttled, right away to Vinson base camp.  They haven’t been wasting any time.  Their carry to high camp is already done and they’re back at C1 waiting for the right weather to move up and summit.  They probably couldn’t be in a better position.  The team is healthy, strong and moving well.  All’s good there.

Max Bunce and Team Kilimanjaro are finished, wrapped up and are almost home.  Most will be sleeping in their own beds tonight.  Super trip for the team and Mike Haft will be heading out with a couple more groups in about a month.

Down on Aconcagua, 2 IMG teams are making their way up the mountain.  If weather permits, Peter Adams and crew will be trying to move to C2 today while Josh McDowell and team will be reaching Plaza Argentina (base camp) today.  Again – so far, so good.

Tye and team beneath the Towers

Tye and team beneath the Towers

We also have to report on Tye Chapman and crew and their trek through Patagonia.  I did this trek personally last year with a sensational IMG team (and my wife) and all I can say is – go!  Beautiful, enjoyable and you don’t have to deal with high altitude.  They’re walking up into the French Valley today.  Almost no groups make the extra effort to get up there.  They’ll spend the night at the Refugio Paine Grande.  Our team watched the Super Bowl there last February.  Was that cool or what?!
