Happy Birthday Adam

September 23, 2015

Adam in his element.

Adam in his element.

It is Adam’s Birthday today.  Happy Birthday!  If there is a group of people who know how to celebrate a birthday, it is our Sherpa Team.  Hopefully our guys sing a little bit and get Adam dancing for his birthday.

It sure sounds like Adam and the Dolpo Team are having a good time, clear skies during the day and cool sleeping at night.

“Today we traversed high above the lake to its northern end where we began to follow the Phoksundo Khola north to a campground below the hanging glaciers of Kanjirowa Himal. We are 1.5 days from the Himalayan Crest and eager to see what was on the other side.”

Kili Team Keeps Moving

Craig called from Barranco Camp with good news from the team.  All is well!  (and it is a little chilly)

It is a pretty good test for the Kilimanjaro Climbing Team today.  They are up early and do a little bit of ascending.  They take a gradual climb up to the Lava Tower (14,500’) and then roll back down and into Barranco Camp.

The day started clear and turned cool and breezy for lunchtime.  The team is happy and looking forward to a good meal and a “hands on” approach to the Barranco Wall.

Way to go!

Chicken Curry And A Few Laughs

September 22, 2015

The zone of weird plants. (Ang Jangbu Sherpa)

The zone of weird plants. (Ang Jangbu Sherpa)

Craig John checked in from a breezy but clear Shira Camp.  All is well on Kilimanjaro, the team trekked together and had great views of Kilimanjaro today.  It is right there!  Breaking out of the forest is a great feeling.  Today’s trek signified another climate zone crossing.  From the tall trees of the forest and into the land of “weird plants” like the Lobelia and the Groundsel.  These plants are native to the high mountains of Africa.

After the Chicken Curry dinner and a few laughs, it is off to get some rest.  It is a big day of up and down tomorrow!

Rest Day At Ringmo Camp

September 22, 2015

Rest day activities include fixing Lopsang's prayer beads. (Adam Angel)

Rest day activities include fixing Lopsang’s prayer beads. (Adam Angel)

The Dolpo Team took a scheduled rest day at Ringmo Camp.  Ringmo is the village at the southern shore of Phoksundo Lake. The village is established on the 40,000 year old landslide / natural dam that created the lake. The lake is almost 500’ deep and must be seen in person to appreciate the magnificent color of the water. We took a rest day here and visited the 900 year old Thashung Gompa on the eastern side of the lake.

Tomorrow is the beginning of a 3 day long trek towards the team’s first high pass!

Another Summit In Bolivia

East side of Huayna Potosi. (Mike Hamill)

East side of Huayna Potosi. (Mike Hamill)

Just got a call from IMG guides Roberto Gomez and Mike Hamill.  The timing was perfect for a Huayna Potosi climb.  After climbing Pequeno Alapamayo a small storm blew in over Huayna Potosi and the team decided to hit the breaks for a day.

This proved to be a great decision and this morning, they called in to let us know that is was a great morning to climb!  The Huayna Potosi climb has shown a couple of changes this season.  The first change is that they have decided to climb lower around the Bergschrund onto the east side of the mountain.  After gaining the upper mountain, instead of heading to the exposed ridge, they have chosen to climb directly up the east face to the summit.  It is exposed but we can protect it.

Kili Team Enjoying Life At Machame Camp

September 21, 2015

Machame Camp

Machame Camp

Craig John checked in from Machame Camp at about 10,000 feet.  It was a great day on the trail.  After all of the duffle shuffles and preparations for the Kilimanjaro Climb, it is nice to stretch our legs.

The check in procedure at the Park Entrance can be busy.  When the entire team is together with guides and porters taking care of business, it is important to stand back and watch how everything begins to move up hill.

Great weather for the team today.  Tomorrow, the team will break out of the forest and onto to Shira Plateau.

“It feels great to be back on Kilimanjaro!” said  Kili veteran guide Craig John.

Dolpo Team Near Phoksundo Lake

September 21, 2015

Phoksundo Lake (Adam Angel)

Phoksundo Lake (Adam Angel)

All is well from Phoksundo Lake.  The Dolpo Team will have a rest day tomorrow to contemplate how a lake can be this blue.

The team trekked uphill through the forest and crossed a few notable lines.  As the trek began, the local people were mostly Nepalese hill folk, predominantly Hindu.  As they move further into the region they have moved into an area peopled by those of Tibetan ancestry.  The name of the river changes too; it is now called the Phoksundo Khola.  They followed this river for two days of trekking, until they reach its source: the large Phoksundo Lake at nearly 12,000 feet in the Shey Phoksundo National Park.

Ringmo is the village at the southern shore of Phoksundo Lake. The village is established on the 40,000 year old landslide / natural dam that created the lake. The lake is almost 500’ deep and must be seen in person to appreciate the magnificent color of the water. During their rest day, they will visit the 900 year old Thashung Gompa on the eastern side of the lake.

September IMG Kilimanjaro Team (Craig John)

September IMG Kilimanjaro Team (Craig John)

Craig John just checked in from Moshi.  All members with gear have arrived in Moshi.  With gear checks complete and a beautiful day in Moshi, the team is ready to get on the road and head to the park entrance.

The team was happy to have Lead Chagga Guide Lazzaro walk with them for the day.  He spoke with the team and gave the latest conditions of the trek.

Tomorrow is an early morning.  Let’s go climb Kilimanjaro!

Good Times on the Trail in Dolpo

September 20, 2015

Jor Bahador and his smile (Justin Merle)
Nawang Sherpa, helping Jor Bahador (Adam Angel)

The Dolpo Team was up early to get on the trail.  For those who have not been with us in Nepal, there is a small alarm clock called Jor Bahador.  Jor Bahador is one of our great cooks.  He greets you with a smile and in the morning, wakes you with tea or coffee.  Not a tall man, Jor makes food that leaves you full and scratching your head as to how he made that meal way out here.

After breakfast, the team began their long 14 mile day, ascending through steep old growth juniper forests to Amchi Hospital. “Amchi” means “science of healing” or “doctor” in classical Tibetan and local dialects. This was a very long day! The team is tired but happy and will spend the night above Amchi in Chunuwar.

Tomorrow is a shorter day with a beautiful reward with a steep climb to Ringmo at almost 12,000’.  The afternoon will be spent basking in the sun, a little laundry and probably a shave!

Dolpo Trek Goes Into the Valley

September 19, 2015

Dolpo Trek (Adam Angel)
Dolpo Trek (Adam Angel)

Adam just called from Syangda.  The team maintained their elevation for the most part today.  Warm trekking today as the team entered the deep valley.  The team trekked to Syangda (2,545m), camp.  This is a great altitude to start at for the first couple days.

With residual effects of the monsoon season, they will keep their eyes open for some afternoon rain but tonight, the team will lounge by the Suli Khola (river).

 Beautiful place!
