IMG Senior Guide, Charlotte Austin, reports in from Tanzania as she begins another Kilimanjaro expedition.  We’ll be wishing them all a safe, successful and enjoyable trip.

The team is all smiles!

Hey guys,

Greetings from Moshi! It got hot here, so we’re enjoying sitting in the shade after a great day of gear checks, running errands, and stocking up on souvenirs. Now we’re sitting at the Union Cafe waiting for our pizzas to be delivered. About to crack a Kilimanjaro beer!

Thanks,

Charlotte

IMG Lead Guide Justin Merle hit a mile marker on the Kautz Glacier of Mt. Rainier last week, July 14.

Justin, a world traveled guide for IMG, now has seven summits of Mt. Everest to his name. But last week was all about Mt. Rainier. Justin completed his 150th successful ascent. That places Justin in the upper echelon of all Mt. Rainier guides. In our book, he is one of the best ever!

Congratulations, Justin!

Bolivia 2016 – Here We Go!

Andy is psyched!  He has the first Bolivia Team together in La Paz.  “All members with all duffels.”  Gear checks are complete and this Team is dialed.  No hiccups with gear is a great way to start the trip.

The Team had the welcome dinner last night and are doing a little sightseeing and acclimatizing around La Paz today.

They’re out the door tomorrow morning for continued slow acclimatization. First stop is the shores of Lake Titicaca (12,000ft.) followed by a nice hike on Sun Island up to 14,000ft.  Let’s not feel too sorry for these guys!

4 Spots on Next Emmons Climb: Get ‘Em While They’re Hot

July 12, 2016

It’s not every day that we get last-minute cancellations on Rainier trips, as spots usually sell out quickly and trips stay solidly booked throughout the season. Our next Emmons Glacier trip, however, from July 17 to July 21, has four open spaces for anyone interested. Although the Emmons route is more physically demanding than the Disappointment Cleaver route due to the heavier pack loads and longer distance traveled, it is significantly less crowded and provides the same beautiful views and mountain experience. Here are a couple of photos from our last Emmons trip to pique your interest:

Because we provide training in cramponing, ice axe arrests, and rope travel as part of the climb, there are no prerequisites other than a high level of fitness. So if you are in excellent shape and can make it out to Ashford this Sunday until next Thursday, you are welcome to sign up! For more information about the itinerary, gear, pricing, and how to sign up, click here. Hope to see you soon in the mountains!

Kilimanjaro from Mweka Camp

Kilimanjaro from Mweka Camp

Charlotte and team are off the mountain and back at the hotel in Moshi.  Everyone’s happy and healthy, nursing sore knees with burgers and Kilimanjaro beer.

Steve and Tiffany are on their way home tonight with Mark and Lauren heading home in the morning.  Charlotte will be taking off to climb Meru for the next couple of days.  It’s been a great trip with great climbers.  No safari this trip but Charlotte remains ‘psyched’ to meet our next team and climb Kilimanjaro when she returns from Mt. Meru.  Yes, it is that much fun.

"Jumping for Joy" on the summit of Kilimanjaro (from a prior trip)

“Jumping for Joy” on the summit of Kilimanjaro (from a prior trip)

Received two sat phone calls from Charlotte in the last 24 hours.  The first (evening of the 8th, PT) was to let us know that everyone was standing on the top of Africa and the second (this morning, the 9th) was to let us know that everyone was down at Mweka Camp (10,000 ft.), tired, fed and ready for a well-deserved sleep.  The hike out will take around 4 hrs. tomorrow and they’ll be getting showers, putting on clean clothes, eating and drinking, a bunch, and telling a lot of ‘war stories’ as they celebrate their success with a final team dinner.

Our congratulations to Mark and Lauren, Stephen and Tiffany for being super team members and for climbing with Charlotte and our Chagga crew to the summit of Kilimanjaro.  They totally nailed this one!

Gung Ho & Ready To Go

July 8, 2016

Sunrise on the way to the top.

Sunrise on the way to the top.

I was at Starbucks when Charlotte called this morning.  Team’s at high camp (Barafu), packed up, fed and hydrated and ready to get up around midnight and head to the summit.  “Healthy, strong and gung ho” was Charlotte’s description of her team.  Weather remains good and we’ll let you know how they do on their summit attempt tomorrow.   Altitude is always tough and nothing is ever a sure thing at 19,000 ft, so we still keep our fingers crossed and wish them a safe, successful and enjoyable climb tomorrow.

Kili Crew At Karanga Camp

Chaggas getting it done!

Chaggas getting it done!

Another great day.  Right out of camp is the Barranco Wall – a couple of hours of fun scrambling and trying to figure out how the Chagga porters do it with a load balanced on their heads.  Then, it’s down, up, down and up and you’re at Karanga Camp (13,500 ft).  One of the advantages of doing a 7 day itinerary is that you have 2 relatively short days getting into high camp.  Weather remains great and everyone remains healthy.  Everything’s as it should be.

Kili Team At Barranco Camp

Barranco Camp

Barranco Camp

Barranco Camp (13,000 ft) is by far and away the most scenic camp on Kilimanjaro.  That’s where our team is sleeping now.  They had another day of great weather and no problems.  Group remains healthy, strong and totally psyched.

Huayhuash Trek Begins Tomorrow

July 5, 2016

Michel Henostroza

Michel Henostroza

For the second year, I’m working with Michel Henostroza, a 30 year-old IFMGA aspiring mountain guide who comes from a long lineage of guides based in Huaraz, Peru. In the 90’s, when I first started climbing in the Cordillera Blanca, I worked with Michel’s grandfather, Humberto. He started his mountain career as a porter, then a guide, and in his later years as a talented cook. At that time I also worked with Michel’s father, Maximo, who has become a life-long friend. As an Austrian certified IFMGA guide, Maximo is strong addition to any trip. In 2001, Maximo assisted me on Mt. Everest, and became the second Peruvian to reach the 29,028′ summit. So, climbing is in Michel’s blood in more than one way.

We depart tomorrow for the Cordillera Huayhuash trek with Michel, who has guided the trek over a dozen times. Together, we have a small group of 3 excited and experienced trekkers. Our first camp will be near the road end, at an altitude of 13,800′, called by it’s local Quechean name of Cuartelwayin. Our local treks yesterday and today will help prepare us for the move to higher altitude, and the start of our trek.

During the trek, we’ll check in with the IMG office every few days, and they will post our progress. When we return to Huaraz on July 15, I’ll check in with a quick post, then forward some pictures in the following days of some of the incredible scenery we are bound to see.
