Ready for the flights home (Phunuru Sherpa)

Ready for the flights home (Phunuru Sherpa)

The Kilimanjaro and safari team are all at the airport now getting ready to board their flights home. They made the drive from the Farm House lodge this morning and picked up some souvenirs along the way. What a trip this one has been! They’ve been to the Roof of Africa and seen endless wildlife on the Serengeti! All of our summer Kili trips and safaris have been huge successes. We’d like to once again congratulate everyone on an amazing climb and safari. And huge thanks to IMG guide, Phunuru Sherpa, and all our partners in Africa. This trip is truly a once in a lifetime type of trip and I’m sure the climbers will enjoy sharing stories and pictures of their adventure once they are home. Next month, you can follow our September Kili climb and safari right here!

Hot Springs Before The Climb…Why Not?

Great days for the team in Bolivia.  After a drive to Sajama Village yesterday where the team has to jump to 14,000 feet, they took today to stretch their legs and acclimatize.  The weather is perfect so the team went out to check out the Geysers small hot springs.  These things are everywhere in this area of the Altiplano.  Not a surprise as you look around and see the volcanoes of the Cordillera Occidental range.  While visiting the Geysers, our long time head Bolivian Guide, Roberto pulled out a few eggs and placed them in the Hot Springs.  It worked, hardboiled eggs for lunch.

After a stressful morning of hiking and taking in the mountain views, Andy said it was time to unwind.  The Natural Hot Springs will be perfect for that.  I promise, there will be a few tough climbing days in front of this team, but for now, some acclimatizing in the warm water of the Altiplano.

We heard from IMG Senior Guide, Phunuru Sherpa, that the team is all back at the Farm House Lodge for the night. They had another incredible day of game viewing; and a long one at that. The team woke up at the Wilderness Camp in the Serengeti, drove out of the national park (spotting lazy lions in route), through Maasai countryside, and then up and into Ngorongoro Crater. Then, the afternoon was spent driving around the Crater which is packed full of wildlife, lunch by the hippo pool, and then up and out of the Crater to the lodge. What a day this one is! You see so much – animals, people, culture and landscapes – its hard to comprehend everything you are seeing. It’s a day I’m sure the team won’t soon forget. Right now, they are relaxing at the extremely comfortable Ngorongoro Farm House – one of the nicest places I’ve ever spent a night anywhere. Tomorrow, they will continue to relax at the Farm House for the morning. Then, after lunch, they will make their way back to Arusha to grab the rest of their luggage. Along they way they’ll have the opportunity to do some shopping and pick up some souvenirs and gifts. Then, its on to the airport for evening flights home. What a trip this has been! Congrats to the team on another amazing African adventure!

Bolivia Team 2 Acclimatizing In The Cordillera Occidental

August 9, 2016

Sajama panorama (Greg Vernovage)

Andy just checked in from Sajama Village (14,000’) near the border of Chile.  The team had a good day driving across the Altiplano and perfect weather.  The wind is one of the biggest obstacles that we face when heading to this area and Andy has reported calm winds.  The forecast is positive for the next few days.

The Cordillera Occidental is a gorgeous area to visit and climb.  Tomorrow the team is going to acclimatize by visiting the local hot springs and geysers.  The accessibility of these massive peaks makes it very easy to go too high a little too fast.  It will be nice to have some sightseeing to keep them busy for a couple days.

Andy just checked in with a very strong looking Sajama team.  The team is all in La Paz for one more night after dodging and weaving a couple flight delays.  All is well and gear is in hand.

It was a beautiful day in La Paz for the City Tour and a great team dinner.  Tomorrow the team is out the door for Sajama Village (14,000’).  You are reading that right, they are heading up the hill to El Alto and across the Altiplano.  It is no secret that this is a challenging trip.

Looking at how fit this team looks, I am excited to hear the daily report from Andy on their progress.

Let’s climb!

Productive Day in the Serengeti

Lion on the Serengeti

Lion on the Serengeti

“Another great day in Africa” was the report from Phunuru this morning.  The team flew today to the Serengeti and, as Phunuru said, have already seen most of the animals!  They have two nights at the same camp to explore and enjoy the Serengeti.  Another game drive tomorrow after breakfast and then return to camp for lunch and a nap.  Back at it again in the afternoon before enjoying another evening by the fire in the middle of the Serengeti.
Things couldn’t be a lot better.

Happy Climbers and Pizza in Moshi

Pizza in Moshi! (Phunuru Sherpa)
Pizza in Moshi! (Phunuru Sherpa)

The hard work is over and now its time for the reward! IMG Senior Guide, Phunuru Sherpa, and the Kili team are all back in Moshi enjoying a celebratory dinner (pizza). Now, all thoughts turn to the safari ahead. This is really the way to go. Climb first and safari second. The reward of a hard week’s effort is huge — a Serengeti Safari! Doesn’t get any better than spotting wildlife from a pop-top Land Cruiser all day and then sitting around a campfire at a plush Wilderness Camp at night. Its a huge understatement to say the Serengeti is amazing. After good night’s sleep tonight, tomorrow morning the team will get picked up and and taken to Arusha where they will fly out to the Serengeti early tomorrow afternoon. Once they hit the runway — and often before — the animal spotting will begin. We wish the team excellent game viewing on the Serengeti!

Kili Team Summits!

Kili Team on Summit (Phunuru Sherpa)

Kili Team on Summit (Phunuru Sherpa)

We received word overnight from IMG Senior Guide, Phunuru Sherpa, that the team has summited and are all now safely back down at Mweka Camp at around 10,000 ft. What a day the team had! The weather continued to be perfect and the team was all smiles from the top. They will sleep great tonight – after a good, hot meal. A long, hard day and many restless nights are now behind them. Tomorrow is an easy one. 3-4 hours of hiking downhill through the forest on good trail. No problem for this crew. Once back in Moshi, showers, relaxing and a celebratory dinner are in order! We’d like to congratulate the team on a successful summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro! Now go enjoy that safari!

Excitement at Barufu High Camp

IMG Senior Guide, Phunuru Sherpa, just called in from Barafu High Camp (~15,200 ft) on Kili with more good news. All is well with the team and they will leave Barafu at midnight for the summit. That will be around 2pm for us here on the west coast of the US. The report from Phunuru is that the weather continues to be great and there are a lot of other teams at Barafu who will also be climbing tonight. Barafu is a very interesting camp strung out along a rocky ridge with amazing views all around. The team will likely be too excited to get much sleep tonight, but thats just fine. Eating, drinking and resting is all that the team needs to be well prepared for the big day. And it will be a big day! About 4,000 feet of elevation gain to the top before descending all that and more down to the thick air of their last camp at around 10,000 ft. Probably a 16+ hour day but, wow, it is amazing! And so worth the effort! We look forward to hearing from Phunuru from the summit sometime this evening. Good luck team!

Our Kili team has been doing great the past several days. Everyone is feeling fine and the weather has been nice. Can’t ask for much more than that. Oh, and did we mention the views? Those aren’t bad either! Overnight (for us) the team climbed from Barranco Camp (~13,000 ft) up to the top of the Barranco Wall at around 14,000 feet. This is a fun day with some minor rock scrambling using your hands. The Wall looks much more intimidating from Barranco Camp than it actually is. The Kili porters climb the Barranco Wall with close to 50 lbs of gear — mostly on their heads! They are amazing. Once on top of the Barranco Wall the team traversed a few minor valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp at around 13,300 ft. Another great acclimatization day and a fairly short day one at that. A hot lunch was awaiting the team at camp and then they spent the afternoon relaxing and enjoying the views. Tomorrow is another short day for the team as they climb from Karanga Camp up to Barafu Camp. Only 3 or 4 hours of hiking and a couple thousand feet of vertical to climb, but its a slow walk at these altitudes. They are getting closer and the excitement is growing!
