Vinson Team Setting up for Flight to the Ice

December 28, 2016

Cargo section of the IL76

Cargo section of the IL76

The toughest part of many expeditions is getting everyone together in one place with all their luggage at the same time.  Greg has everyone together but a couple of bags didn’t want to cooperate.  Greg has been doing a yeoman’s job of pushing the airlines and organizing ‘Plan B’, just in case.  Looks like, if all goes according to plan, bags will catch up today!  That’s a big deal as, again with any luck, the IL 76 flies to the Ice tomorrow morning.  Regardless, ‘Plan B’ has been organized and is in place, just in case.  The IL is getting loaded today.  Final briefing is today, final hotel night is today, final restaurant meal is today.  This team wants to celebrate New Year’s on the Ice!

On Aconcagua, Team 1 Carries to Camp 2

Route above C1

Route above C1

Jonathan checked in just now.  Carry made up to C2 and now everyone is back at C1 for the night.  “Climb high, sleep low” is still the right way to climb big mountains.  Team will likely make a move to C2 tomorrow, provided everyone is feeling reasonable and weather continues to hold.

Aconcagua Team 2, Out the Door and on the Trail

Josh and Team at Penitentes

Josh and Team at Penitentes

Josh and crew are on the trail.  They sent us this photo early today from Penitentes, just prior to starting their 3 day approach.  The mules make it relatively easy, as members only need to carry gear needed for that day’s walk.  Josh said the crew was ‘chomping at the bit’ to get out the door.

Leopards, Lions and a Crater

Wildlife in Ngorongoro Crater (Dustin Balderach)

Wildlife in Ngorongoro Crater (Dustin Balderach)

We just heard from IMG senior guide Max Bunce over on the Serengeti. This morning (Tanzanian time) the team will leave the Serengeti for their next stop, the Ngorongoro Crater. The team has seen a lot of wildlife so far and more is on the way! With the leopard they saw the first day, and lions today, they’ve now seen 4 of the ‘Big 5’. Hopefully they’ll be able to check that last one off the list over in the Ngorongoro Crater later today. Rhinos are tough to spot, but the Crater is a great place to sneak a peek at one. The Crater is absolutely packed full of wildlife and its one of my favorite places on the safari. After an afternoon exploring the Crater, the team will head out of the Crater and to their luxury accommodations for their last night. I know they’ll have some stories to tell over dinner tonight! Tomorrow the team will head back to Arusha for some final shopping before their flights home. What a trip it has been!

Vinson Team Ready to Go in Punta

December, 28 2016

Greg with his crew in Punta

Greg with his crew in Punta

Time to check in with Vinson Trip #2.  IMG Senior Guide, Greg Vernovage, is again leading our ‘holiday trip’.  The team has arrived in Punta Arenas, Chile.  Punta is the jumping off point for our trips to Vinson Massif, the highest mountain on the Antarctic continent.  Gear checks have already been conducted.  You can imagine, those are fairly important when heading to Antarctica.  Group and personal gear gets picked up tomorrow and the IL 76 (big Russian cargo jet) gets loaded for the trip to the Union Glacier at about 80 degrees S. latitude.  The team will also participate in an orientation tomorrow, where they’ll learn about safety, ecology, logistics, etc. for their trip to the Ice.

A trip to Antarctica is one ‘heck’ of a way to start the new year.  With any luck, Vinson base camp is exactly where they’ll be come New Year’s Eve.

Josh McDowell and Team Ready for Aconcagua

Josh McDowell and Team Ready for Aconcagua

Josh, Nickel, Leandro and team left Mendoza this morning for Penitentes.  That’s about a 4 hour drive.  They’ll spend the afternoon prepping loads for the mules , enjoying a last restaurant meal and then one last ‘bed’ night at the lodge there before beginning their 3 day approach.

Team 2 is on their way!

A Good Christmas Day for IMG’s Aconcagua Teams

December 26, 2016

Santa was reasonably good to our teams on Aconcagua.  Jonathan Schrock and crew were able to push through pretty good winds and moved up to C1 today, located about 16,000ft.  Some guy named Rudolf led the way.  Likely a rest day tomorrow.

View of Aconcagua on way to C1

Santa also delivered for Josh McDowell and team when 4 of the last 5 missing pieces of luggage arrived Christmas day.  Last bag doesn’t have any critical items so all is a ‘go’ for those guys.

Aconcagua is a big, expedition climb with lots of pieces to the logistics.  Strong, experienced leadership tends to pay off, as does having a long-time Argentine guide working with each of our teams.

Kili Team Flies to Serengeti

Seronera Airport (photo: Eric Simonson)

Max reports that the Kilimanjaro team flew to Seronera Airport in the middle of the Serengeti today and are ensconced at a nearby beautiful safari lodge.  There are lots of animals in the vicinity.  The team had some nice viewing between the “airport” (the pilots need to watch out for animals while landing) and the hotel.  Tomorrow is a full day of game viewing and everyone is looking forward to it!

Aconcagua Teams Making Christmas Day Progress

December 25, 2016

Merry Christmas to and from our Aconcagua teams.  Jonathan Schrock and crew took Saturday off at base camp.  They’re doing quite well.  They all ‘passed’ their medical exam with the Park and enjoyed a rest day with dinner of steak and even a little sip of champagne.  They’re spending Christmas day making their first foray up higher, with a carry to Camp 1.  Likely to be a little windy but hopefully they’ll get the carry completed.

Aconcagua Base Camp from above

In Mendoza, Josh McDowell and his crew are ‘wrestling’ with some delayed luggage.  We’re all working with the airlines and Argentine customs to get the bags cleared and into Mendoza.  This kind of thing is always tougher than fighting a little wind on a carry.  Seeing that luggage tomorrow will be their best Christmas present ever.

Kili Team Returns to Moshi

December 25, 2016

The Kilimanjaro team finished their descent this morning and have now made it back to the hotel in Moshi,  from where Max was able to send us their summit photo.

IMG team on the summit of Kilimanjaro (photo: Max Bunce)

Everyone is in good spirits and looking forward to their celebration tonight.  Well done team. Tomorrow morning they fly to Serengeti to begin their safari.  There is nothing like a few days of luxury safari, after a completing a hard climb.  What a great way to put the icing on the cake!
