Last Elbrus Trip of 2017 Hits the Sights

Let’s check in with our third and final group for the 2017 Elbrus season.

Mike Hamill met this team of 6 in Moscow and they got in a couple of days of seeing the sights before heading down to the Caucasus.  As this was a private, custom team, they had a bit of extra time and even took in a performance at the Bolshoi.

Then it was off to Mineralnye Vody and Caucasus.  They were met at the airport by Sasha Sak, one of our Russian friends and guides, and they all traveled together to the mountain.  The team is settled into their hotel near the village of Terskol and looking forward to the upcoming adventure.

First order of business is a day of acclimatization.  There’s an observatory just above Terskol which works perfectly.

We’ll keep you posted.

All Continues To Go Well In Mongolia

July 31, 2017

Greg and Charlotte found some internet over the weekend so we finally have some photos!

Happy climbers! (Charlotte Austin)

All continues to go well in Mongolia. Some team members departed over the weekend while Greg and several others stuck around for the optional extension. On Saturday, the team enjoyed a drive across the countryside followed by a camel ride to their Ger (yurt) Camp.

Yesterday they toured Karakorum, the medieval capital of the Mongolian Empire. Some highlights include ruins from when the Chinese Min Dynasty leveled the city in the 1300’s as well as the Edene Zuu Monastery which was built in the 16th century. After the tour they’ll head to their second Ger Camp.

Tomorrow brings a drive to Khustai National Park, where in 1993, the last remaining horses called the “Przewalski horses” (“takhi” by the locals) were re-introduced to their original home.  This area is known as one of the most successful nature and wildlife preservation projects in Mongolia.  They will tour the preserve, then drive back to Ulaanbaatar for the night at a hotel.

In addition to the extension mentioned above, we’ve got a Gobi Desert private program in motion. Charlotte met them (and all their luggage!) in Ulaanbaatar over the weekend. They enjoyed a city tour yesterday and will load up here in a few hours for their flight to Dalanzadgag on the eastern flanks of the Gobi Desert. From there it’s a 75km jeep ride to their Ger Camp before an afternoon hike – that’s a full day!

Tye and Eric,

This has been an absolutely incredible trip!  We are wrapping things up in the Alti Range at Bayan Olgii tonight and will be flying back to Ulaanbataar in the morning.

Here are a few pictures with many more to come when I get back to the computer to download from the camera. Charlotte has also taken some great photos.

Yup this is a camel. Look at that sky! (Greg Vernovage)

We had a great team meal tonight with a local Mongolian/Kazakh family. Local food in a traditional setting at the family Ger (yurt).  They ended the evening with music that blew us away!

There is so much for this team to share with everyone back home!

Stay tuned!

Successful Elbrus Team Wraps up, Heads Home

Time to call it a wrap.  The team finished up with their touring in Moscow, including the Kremlin and Red Square and is now on their way home.  Hugely successful trip and, we trust, a very enjoyable one, to boot.

Thanks to Mike, Sasha, Igor and our entire team of climbers.  Everyone did their part and the result was a safe, successful and enjoyable two weeks seeing St. Petersburg, the Baksan Valley, Moscow and, oh yeah, summiting Elbrus and knocking off one of the Seven Summits.

We’re not quite done with the Elbrus season.  Mike will be meeting a custom team of IMG climbers tonight for one more trip back to Elbrus.  They’ll use our same itinerary, only reversing the Moscow and St. Pete visits.  This time Moscow first and they’ll wrap up their trip in St. Petersburg.  Igor will get them organized in Moscow and Mike will escort the team down to Terskol where Sasha will be waiting to climb with them.  Sounds like a plan!

The Team

Things just keep getting nicer for the Elbrus team. Mike, Igor and Sasha report really nice weather today for their final hike in the Baksan Valley. They even did a bit of bouldering. Tomorrow they say good-bye to Terskol and Sasha and head to Moscow. Mike and Igor will be with the team as they spend a day and a half checking out the sights and the city.

Mongolia Team Summits Mt. Khuiten

July 25, 2017

Greg called in with great news from Mt. Khuiten in far western Mongolia. Summit! The strategy mentioned yesterday paid off.  Absolutely perfect climbing conditions. It was “calm and clear for as far as the eye could see”. Their plan was to make their way to back to High Camp to load up the camels then continue on down to Base Camp so they could enjoy a rest day before heading back to Bayan Olgii and eventually Ulaanbaatar.

All smiles for this team!

Elbrus Team Relaxing in the Baksan Valley

The hard work is done for our Elbrus team and they’re now enjoying their last bit of time in the Baksan Valley.  They headed out this morning to ride up the lifts at the ski area of Cheget.  A little too much in the way of cloud cover to get good views of the mountain but no matter.  This team’s already seen the views from the summit.

Moscow is next on the agenda.  They’ll need another vacation to rest up from this ‘vacation’.  All remains good in Russia!

Phunuru Sherpa Visits The USA

You might wonder what a high altitude sherpa climber from Nepal might be doing this summer.  Well, IMG Guide Phunuru Sherpa was in Yosemite Valley this past week training with the National Park Service Yosemite Search and Rescue (YOSAR) Team.  He reports a lot of great climbing and training up in the Tuolumne Pass area (above the haze from recent forest fires).  Next up for Phunuru is a visit to Texas and Colorado to see some friends, and then he is going up to Glacier National Park for more NPS rescue training.  Phunuru will be returning back to Nepal after that, to get ready for the IMG Putha Hiunchuli Expedition.  Later this year he is also leading the IMG December Kilimanjaro climb.

Mongolia Team Summits Nairandal Peak

July 24, 2017

Have you ever stood in three countries at one time? Me neither! Greg checked in this morning to report that he and his team called an audible and opted to climb nearby Nairandal Peak (13,714ft.). They were slated to climb Nairandal Peak after Mt. Khuiten, but given the forecast and the visible wind/precip on Mt. Khuiten it made a ton of sense to swap the climbs, saving the taller of the two for today. Greg reported that it was a great climb. Rolling glacier travel followed by a summit that shares the border with Russia to the north and China to the south, pretty cool stuff.

When Greg called they were safely back in Mongolia at High Camp putting together a gameplan for Mt. Khuiten. Their plan is to wake up about 3am and take a look, and if the forecast holds true, they’ll put their boots on and give it a go. We’ll know more in a few hours.

All is well in Mongolia…and China…and Russia.
