Another great day on Kilimanjaro!  Dustin checked in by satellite phone this morning (Pacific Time) reporting that he and his team had a blast climbing the Barranco Wall today. It was nice and cool this morning with some good cloud cover which made for good climbing conditions. Once on top of the Barranco Wall the sky opened up giving them some great views.

When they pulled into Karanga Camp they were greeted by an amazing lunch. On the menu was fried chicken, french fries, a nice salad and some fresh watermelon.  After lunch it was time to settle in and take some photos. Dustin found a good signal and was able to get a good batch of photos out. Their view from Karanga Camp says it all!

Tomorrow they’ll get up at about 6:30am to get to Barafu Camp(15,000ft.) nice and early so they can get a good rest before summit day.

All is well at Karanga Camp on Kilimanjaro!

Shira Camp –> Lava Tower –> Barranco Camp

September 15, 2017

Hiking up to Lava Tower (Dustin Balderach)

Another great day on the trail, is how Dustin described today. He said this team is super strong which means they’re able to enjoy every aspect of the climb.  Two big highlights today, the Lava Tower and their sighting of the elusive Eland antelope.

At close to 8 hours, it was a long day on the trail, but it wasn’t a grind. Lots of ups and downs and plenty of open air trail up on top of the Shira Plateau. It’s nice to get above the trees and feel the breeze. Dustin did say they got their first real glimpse of Kili. It’s been cloudy the past few days which has kept the temperature down, but they’d been waiting for the big view of the mountain their climbing. They got one today.

Tomorrow is the favorite day of the climb for a lot our climbers. They’ll get to use their hands a little bit as they scramble up the Barranco Wall. It looks more ominous than it actually is (and sounds). For most climbers it’s a fun 1-2 hours of early morning scrambling.  Once on top of the wall the trail continues to Karanga Camp, their stop for the night.

All is well on Kilimanjaro!

The Zone Of Weird Plants is a very memorable place for a lot of Kilimanjaro climbers, and for this team it was no exception. Dustin said they took their time today, taking advantage of the good weather and any photo opportunity that presented itself.

Even with all the photo stops it took the team just under 5 hours to get to Shira Camp (12,000ft). Once at camp they were greeted with some drumsticks and popcorn as an afternoon snack. After getting settled in, more photos (and naps) were taken. On the menu tonight is spaghetti.

From the sounds of it, this team is having an absolute blast. Tomorrow, they’ll leave Shira Camp getting as high as 14,500ft. before dropping down to Barranco Camp at 13,000ft. This is a great day of hiking and a perfect acclimatization day which will set the team up for success in the coming days.

More tomorrow, but for now, all continues to go well in Tanzania!

IMG Senior Guide Dustin Balderach checked in from Machame Camp on Kilimanjaro reporting all is well!

As planned, the team hopped in the 4wd vehicles after breakfast for their drive through the coffee and banana farms to the Kilimanjaro Entrance Station which sits at about 6000ft. Once checked in they were officially climbing Kilimanjaro. Dustin said it was a cool and cloudy day which made for a nice trek up to Machame Camp (10,000ft). It took them about 5 hours to get to camp, but who’s keeping track of time when you’re surrounded by blue monkeys in a lush rain forest.  Once in camp they got settled in, as did the clouds. Cool and misty was Dustin’s weather report. Nice sleeping weather!

Tomorrow they’ll load up and climb out of the forest into the ‘zone of weird plants’ en route to the Shira Plateau Camp (12,000ft.).

All is well in Tanzania!

Kili Team Ready To Start Climb Tomorrow

September 12, 2017

Pizza and milkshakes! (Dustin Balderach)

More good news from Tanzania. Dustin checked in again today to report that the team enjoyed a great (and efficient) day in Moshi. Gear checks & duffel bag weigh-ins went smoothly which allowed the team to explore Moshi a bit and take care of a few errands. What errands you ask, well they hit up the money exchange to pick up some Tanzanian shillings, then made their way to the grocery store, the local market, then had pizza for lunch and even snuck in a milkshake. The weather was nice and cool which was enjoyed by all.

They were on their way to dinner when Dustin called. On the menu was likely a burger & fries and maybe a Kilimanjaro Beer. Don’t worry, they’ve got all week to burn these calories.

After breakfast tomorrow they’ll head up to the Machame Gate to start their climb!

Heck of a Vacation! (Charlotte Austin)

IMG guide Charlotte Austin reported in over the weekend on the Salkantay Trek’s successes. The team returned from Machu Picchu on Friday the 8th to Cusco and enjoyed a celebration dinner the last night in town. On Saturday the 9th all members had some time to do final shopping and touring in Cusco before an evening flight to Lima. Late Saturday  night/early  Sunday morning the team made their ways back home. Some had issues with flights into Miami on the way home but were able to redirect and eventually reach home.

Congratulations to the entire team for a solid effort on an excellent trek in Peru.

Kilimanjaro in the distance from our hotel in Moshi (Dustin Balderach)

IMG Senior Guide Dustin Balderach checked in this afternoon to report that he and his team all arrived in Moshi, Tanzania with their luggage. We say it a lot, but this is a fantastic way to start off a Kilimanjaro Climb!

They’ve all crashed for the night. The time zone / jet lag adjustment begins now. Tomorrow is a big day. Gear checks, money exchange, sightseeing,  pre-climb briefing, duffel packing and if all goes as planned, a milkshake.

All is well in Moshi.

2018 Mt. Rainier Dates Released

2018 Mt. Rainier Dates Released

Mt Rainier

It’s official, our 2018 Mt. Rainer dates have been released and with just 8 climbers and 4 guides on each climb they go fast!

Let’s cut to the chase:

Denali Expedition Seminar & Summit Climb: Literally a prerequisite for Denali. This program features 6.5 days of learning/training/climbing and generally getting your butt kicked by the winter weather on Mt. Rainier. This program is for you if you have your eyes on Denali or if you’ve got your eyes on an elusive winter summit of Mt. Rainier. Included in the price of the program is lodging for your first night in Ashford and all breakfasts and dinners on the mountain. At a cost of $2,000 for the 6.5 day program, this is an incredible deal with 2: 1 guiding and free lodging the first night.

AIARE Avalanche Level I  & Level II
There are few things like experiencing the mountains during the winter. The beauty, the majesty, the solitude, the vastness. To safely experience the mountains during the winter we need specific skills. Whether we are backcountry skiing/snowboarding, snowshoeing, or climbing our ability to assess avalanche hazard and travel in avalanche terrain is paramount to our safety and success in reaching our objectives. Join IMG’s team of certified avalanche educators who work as avalanche professionals throughout the United States to learn and hone your avalanche skills.

Kautz Route: This is a great climb for the climber with previous climbing experience. This is the best option for those who’d like to return to Rainier to attempt a different, slightly more challenging route.  1 day traversing the south side of Mt. Rainier, 1 day climbing the Turtle Snowfield, Summit day up the Kautz Ice Chute and 1 day down to the parking lot. All Kautz climbs now include an Advanced Mountain Day School to help get you prepared for the conditions on the route. A prior attempt of Mt. Rainier via the DC or Emmons routes is recommended.

3.5 Day Disappointment Cleaver Route: We believe this program is far and away the most enjoyable way to climb Rainier and is also great introduction to mountaineering. It starts out with a half-day orientation and gear check. On the 1st day of the climb the group will ascend the Muir Snowfield up to Camp Muir (10,000ft). After dinner (usually IMG’s world famous burritos) it’s off to a full night’s sleep in the Gombu bunkhouse. Day 2 features a nice breakfast (usually pancakes and bacon) followed by a 1/2 day training at Camp Muir. After the training the group will move up to High Camp at the Ingraham Flats (11,000ft). Day 3 of the climb is reserved for the summit attempt and then all the way back down to Paradise and on to IMG HQ to hopefully sign the summit board.

4.5 Day Emmons Route: Another great introduction to Mt. Rainier and mountaineering. Maybe just a little tougher than the 3.5 day climb but the extra day on the mountain makes up for it. We’ll take 2 days to get to Camp Schurman (9500ft), 1 day reserved for the summit day and 1 day to get back to the trailhead. A perfect climb for the fit individual looking for a little more adventure.

For the more experienced climbers we have more technical programs like the Fuhrer Finger Route and Liberty Ridge.

Additional programs include: Little Tahoma Seminar, Glacier Skills Seminars, Mountain Day Schools, Advanced Mountain Day Schools and Crevasse Rescue schools. These are popular programs for climbers looking to get a grasp of the basic skills needed to pursue climbs on their own.

More questions? Don’t miss our Rainier FAQ which should answer a lot of your initial questions.

Ready to sign up? Click here to see our registration forms. Please note that the only way to apply for a position on a Mt. Rainier climb is to submit a completed application form. Absolutely no reservations or holds can be made over the phone.

IMG guide Charlotte Austin reported in each evening these past two days. The entire team is healthy and doing well. They  hiked up and over their high point today, Salkantay Pass at over 15,000 feet in elevation!

Charlotte said they had some rain today (unusual!) but everyone did well. Actually, she said “Team is having a blast, and everything is great!”  The team has arrived at camp for the evening and a well-deserved rest.

Tomorrow they head down to lower and warmer terrain, and the town of Santa Theresa and its waiting hot springs!
