Happy climbers! (Charlotte Austin)

In August we sent Greg Vernovage and Charlotte Austin to Mongolia along with some long time IMG climbers who wanted to go on IMG’s inaugural Mt. Khuiten expedition in far western Mongolia. Normally a new program like this comes with a few bumps and bruises, but we did our homework and this team had a blast!

With the first trip a resounding success, we’re happy to report that this expedition is now officially on the 2018 Calendar with dates of July 15 – 27, 2018.

While the feature of the trip is a climb of Mt. Khuiten, the feedback we received from the first team was that the climb was absolutely amazing, but the experiences (Mongolian Horse Vodka anyone?) that surround the climb make the program.

So, if you’ve got a Mt. Rainier type climbing background and a truly adventurous spirit, take a look at Mongolia next summer, you won’t be disappointed!

But wait, there’s more! I almost forgot to mention that this program also climbs Nairandal Peak which sits on the border of China, Mongolia and Russia, so if you want to knock out three countries at once, this is the trip!

Another Great Day On Safari

September 22, 2017

Lions on the move. (Dustin Balderach)
Happy team at Serengeti National Park exit gate. (Dustin Balderach)
Cheetah (Dustin Balderach)

All checked in at the Farm House after a third and final amazing day of game viewing. The Serengeti didn’t leave us wanting. As we drove out of the park we passed lions feasting on an overnight wildebeest kill. Then, a cheetah leisurely passed right by us in an unusual slow stroll. Finally, the King and Queen of the Serengeti (male and female lions) laid roadside as we drove out.

After the Serengeti, we then visited the Oldupai gorge to learn a little about our ancestors before making our way to Ngorongoro Crater where we witnessed — among countless other wonders — over a dozen hyenas kill a full grown male warthog right in front of our eyes.

Now as we get ready for our final dinner, two thoughts come to mind. The first is summed up nicely by Mary, a member of our team, “this has exceeded my wildest expectations”.  The second thought that comes to mind is that, I couldn’t think of a better way to reward ourselves for the hard, but successful, climb of Kilimanjaro.

After dropping off the team at the airport tomorrow evening, I’ll have a couple days to prepare to welcome my second team to do it all again. I can’t wait!

Putha Hiunchuli Climb Has Arrived In Dunai

September 21, 2017

Dhaulagiri area map showing the trek route from Juphal to Base Camp.
Camp in Dunai (Pasang Kami)
Team in Dunai (Pasang Kami)

Mike checked in from Dunai this morning to report that the Team had a smooth flight from KTM.  The Team was up early and headed to the airport before rain set in.  The weather in Nepal this time of year is always questionable so we decided to charter a flight directly to Dunai instead of a layover in Nepalgunj.  This proved to be a great decision and put the Team in a great position because the weather in Nepalgunj shut the airport down all day yesterday!

After landing in Juphal, the Team had a short trek to Dunai.  They arrived at camp just in time for lunch.  They were greeted by the Sherpa Advance Team and a camp that was already set up.  Tomorrow, the Team will head to Tarakot.

We will keep you posted on the Teams progress as they head further out and into the wild west of Nepal.  Internet and cell signal becomes more scarce as they head out so we will keep you updated as much as we can with maps and Satellite phone communication.

All is well with the Putha Hiunchuli Climb!

Kili Team Spots 4 Of The Big 5

September 21, 2017

Elephants (Dustin Balderach)
Serengeti Wilderness Camp (Dustin Balderach)
Herd of buffalo (Dustin Balderach)
Giraffes (Dustin Balderach)

Dustin called in again with more great news. The team was able to spot 4 of the Big 5 again today. If you’re counting, the Big 5 are the elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo and rhino. They saw all but the rhino on both days.  Dustin said they’re saving the rhino for the Ngorongoro Crater tomorrow.  They’ve also seen countless zebras, wildebeest, gazelles and giraffes. They’re having a blast!

They enjoyed another night around the campfire under the stars!

Lions And Tigers And Zebras Oh My

September 20, 2017

Ready for safari. (Dustin Balderach)
Zebras. (Dustin Balderach)

Dustin checked in reporting all is well on the Serengeti. He and his team caught their flight out of Arusha and enjoyed the scenic flight which flew them directly over Ngorongoro Crater, their destination in a couple days. Once back on terra firma they jumped into the 4wd vehicles and were immediately greeted by a pride of lions and countless zebras. After a couple hours of game viewing they enjoyed some beverages around the campfire.  That’s a pretty good day by anybody’s standards!

Tomorrow is a full day of game viewing with a picnic lunch at midday. Another night under the stars in our deluxe wildlife camp awaits!

Putha Hiunchuli Team Set For Flight To Juphal

September 19, 2017

Putha Hiunchuli Team Dinner
Porter loads in Dunai (Pasang Kami)

All members of the Team have arrived with their duffels to Kathmandu, always a great start to an expedition.  Mike checked in with a Team Photo from dinner.  The Team has their climbing permit and have done gear checks. They’re ready for their flight to Juphal.

Over at Dunai, Pasang Kami checked in to let us know that gear is arriving on schedule, and that the Sherpa Team is making loads and separating the food needed for the trek and climb.

Weather continues to be favorable and we are looking forward to hearing from the Team once they hit the trail on their way to Putha Hiunchuli Base Camp.

Kili Team Celebrating Summit Before Safari

September 19, 2017

Hiking to Barafu Camp. (Dustin Balderach)
Team on the summit! (Dustin Balderach)
Descending from summit. (Dustin Balderach)

IMG Guide Dustin Balderach checked in from the hotel in Moshi, reporting all is well.  He and his team finished up the descent of their climb in good form, took some celebratory photos at the Mweka Gate, then jumped in the awaiting 4WD vehicles and we’re back at the hotel in no time.

Showers were first on the agenda, beers and cokes were a close second.  They were heading to our traditional Celebration Dinner when Dustin called. It sounds like this team absolutely crushed the climb.

Tomorrow, they’ll head to Arusha to catch their flight to the Serengeti. It’s time to kick back, relax and soak in the wildlife. Next check in from Dustin will be from the Serengeti.

Putha Hiunchuli Expedition Underway

IMG Putha Hiunchuli Ministry Briefing (Jangbu)
Juphal Airport (Kaji Sherpa)
Dunai viewpoint (Kaji Sherpa)
Dunai (Kaji Sherpa)

The Putha Hiunchuli Expedition Team Members have all arrived in Kathmandu and our advanced Sherpa Team has made it to Dunai! We’re off to a great start.

IMG Veteran Cook, Kaji Sherpa, checked in from Dunai over the weekend to let us know that the weather is beautiful, the flight into Juphal was smooth and the internet is not that great. Thankfully he was able to sneak out a few photos despite the marginal internet!  He and our Advanced Team are gathering the expedition equipment and organizing it into loads for the trek in. They’ll be ready to go when the climbing team arrives in a few days.

Back in KTM, Jangbu, Pasang and IMG Guide Mike Hamill are welcoming the Team and have obtained the climbing permit from the Ministry of Tourism.  Tomorrow, they will be doing gear checks and having the Welcome Dinner to go over important logistical information for the days and weeks ahead.

Kilimanjaro Summit Pyramid (Greg Vernovage)

Dustin called in late last night to report that he and 100% if his team summited Kilimanjaro! More importantly, Dustin called in just a few minutes ago to report that everybody made it safely down to Mweka Camp. The air continues to get thicker from here on out!

Tomorrow, they’ll continue down the Mweka route to the Mweka gate to their awaiting 4WD vehicles that will take them back to the hotel for showers and the celebration dinner. Woo hoo!

One more day then it’s time to go on safari!

Kili Team Set & Ready For Summit Day

September 17, 2017

The team at Karanga Camp. (Dustin Balderach)

Dustin checked in from Barafu Camp (aka High Camp) at 15,000ft. on Kilimanjaro. He reports that the team crushed the last leg of the climb and are set and ready for summit day. They’ll wake up around midnight, eat some breakfast, and hit the trail. It’ll be a long day, but sunrise on the summit awaits.

The next time we hear from Dustin should be from the highest point in Africa!
