Olympus is in the books for lead guide, Anna Hicks, and her team! They reached the summit yesterday in “glorious weather!” and spent an incredible night camped by the river, roasting marshmallows for s’mores over the fire (their second of two such nights!). It sounds like they earned it after a summit day that included a two hour adventure scouting and negotiating a sizable, uncooperative bergschrund. It did serve to make the rock pitch at the top all the sweeter. They are safely back at the trailhead and on their way home.

Mongolia Team Moves Up To Base Camp

August 3, 2018

IMG Partner Eric Simonson checked in from Mount Khuiten Base Camp this morning. “Nice day, great views, excellent hike!” is what came across in the text message from Eric.  The team made it to the park entrance and had a nice night by the river.  Up early to pack-up camp and get ready for the day.  The beginning of the hike is up the road and more about how many animals you see than the terrain.  The team enjoys the company of yaks, sheep, goats, golden eagles, horses and of course, the Bactrian 2 humped camel hauling gear.

After 2 hours of trekking and a stream crossing, the team arrives at the top of the hill.  This is the first great view of the mountain range and Mount Khuiten.

Tomorrow, the team will organize gear, rig harnesses and do some training on the lower Potaniin Glacier.

All is well in Mongolia!

Mongolia Team lands in Bayan Olgii (Ang Jangbu Sherpa)

IMG Guide Ang Jangbu Sherpa just checked in from Bayan Olgii.  It was a great flight to Bayan Olgii and the team caught their first glimpse of the Altai Mountain Range.  After landing, the team loaded the Russian vans and started making their way to the National Park Entrance.

The forecast is for more beautiful weather.  The team will get camp set up and get a well-deserved rest.  Up early tomorrow morning for breakfast and a nice trek into Base Camp.

All is well in Mongolia!

IMG Senior Guide Adam Clark checked in early this morning to report 100% on top of Huayna Potosi (19,974 ft).  The team was up and climbing at 3am with a beautiful day in front of them.  The team had a great day and is making their way back down to Base Camp where they will celebrate and relax before heading back to La Paz to regroup for Illimani.

The climb of Huayna Potosi from High Camp heads up a large glacier to Campo Argentina before taking on their first big objective.  The guides will protect the bergschrund with pickets and screws for running belays.  Once above the bergschrund, the morning sun starts to rise and off to the East, they team can look down at the jungle on their right and El Alto’s lights on their left.  2 more hours of steep climbing and the Team is on the summit, Lake Titicaca in the distance and Illimani to the south.

Great climbing in Bolivia!

Lead guide, Anna Hicks, and her Olympus team climbed the glacier to the rock summit this morning. All is well and they are feeling strong! They plan to descend to camp and if they are still feeling vigorous, they may descend a bit farther to shorten their hike out tomorrow.

A job well done!

The team after touching down in the Serengeti (Phunuru Sherpa)
Stay in the vehicle! (Phunuru Sherpa)

Safari wilderness camp (Phunuru Sherpa)
Dinner after a great day on safari (Phunuru Sherpa)

Phunuru checked in from our Serengeti Wilderness Camp. The team had a great flight from Arusha to the Serengeti where they were picked up and immediately immersed in all things wildlife. Right off the bat they saw elephants, zebra, wildebeest and a pride of lions. Not a bad start to a 3-day safari!

Tomorrow they’ll have breakfast at 7:30 and be in the Land Rover at 8:00 for a morning safari. They’ll return to the camp for lunch then head back out for an afternoon drive.

All is well!

Mongolia Round #2

Photo opp with Ghengis Khan (Ang Jangbu Sherpa)

IMG Guides Eric Simonson and Ang Jangbu Sherpa have arrived in Ulaanbaatar along with the team.  Everyone arrived on time with all of their gear.  As always, that is the first goal.  After getting a good night sleep, the team took a city tour.  They visited the monastery, national museum and the main square with Genghis Khan keeping a constant watch over the city.

The team will be up early (4am) and out the door for their flight to Bayan Olgii.  The flight is scenic, with the route going over the Gobi Desert and then heading into the Altai mountain region.

All is well in Mongolia and yes, Ang Jangbu and Eric are out guiding this awesome trip!

Bolivia Team Moves To Huayna Potosi Base Camp

IMG Guide Adam Clark checked in from the Huayna Potosi Base Camp Refugio (15,420ft/4700m).  The team is doing well and are excited to spend the night in the Base Camp Refugio.  This Refugio is one of the cleanest Refugio’s I have ever had the pleasure of staying in.  The owner of the Refugio is named Yolanda.  She is one of the sweetest woman I have ever met in the mountains.  She looks after everyone who comes in and you are often greeted with a smile.  The team will settle in on the top floor of the Refugio and get some rest.

Tomorrow, they will pack their climbing gear into a duffel and head to High Camp (17,060ft/5200m) with the help of some porters.  The trek to High Camp is not technical but as the team heads up hill, they will want to take it nice and slow with the altitude.

All is well on Huayna Potosi in Bolivia!

Celebration dinner (Phunuru Sherpa)

Phunuru checked in this afternoon reporting that he and his team arrived safely back at the hotel in Moshi and enjoyed a nice lunch followed by some well deserved showers. The afternoon was spent relaxing followed by some life maintenance (emails, repacking, beer, etc.). The team came back together in the evening to enjoy their celebration dinner.

Tomorrow they’ll load up and head to the domestic airport in Arusha for their flight to the Serengeti. Once they touch down on the dirt runway they’ll be literally surrounded by animals!

All is well in Tanzania!

Bolivia Team Summits Pequeno Alpamayo

July 30, 2018

Pequeño Alpamayo (Greg Vernovage)
Climbing the Summit Ridge on Pequeno Alpamayo (Roberto Gomez)

IMG Senior Guide Adam Clark checked in from Base Camp on Pequeno Alpamayo (17,482 ft).  The team had great weather for a climb this morning.  Leaving Base Camp, the team trekked about 45 minutes up the trail before arriving at the tongue of the glacier.  From here, they eat, drink, crampon and harness up for the glacier travel section of the climb.  After climbing for about 2 hours on the glacier, the team arrived at the “first summit.”  From the first summit, the team can look across the saddle and see the main summit ridge of Pequeno Alpamayo.  Down climbing some mellow fifth class rock, the team will then cross the saddle and head up the summit ridge.

The team is now resting at Base Camp and will be up around 6 am to head to the trailhead.  The Team will resupply food and continue to Huayna Potosi Base Camp.

Perfect climbing and weather in Bolivia!
