Carstensz Pyramid Update

October 17, 2018

Carstensz Pyramid from Yellow Valley Base Camp (Greg Vernovage)

We received word that one more flight got into Yellow Valley yesterday morning. IMG Senior Guides Jonathan Schrock and Austin Shannon checked in last night to let us know that the window for flying was small yesterday and another group of climbers made it to Yellow Valley. Progress is key!

The logistics and weather are an ever present hurdle for our expedition to Carstensz Pyramid. Having a great team of local guides and support along with two of the best high altitude Guides from IMG makes everything run just a little smoother. Jonathan is at Yellow Valley with some of the team and Austin is bringing up the tail end with our last climbers. The team knows going in that staying flexible and patient is essential. Weather is something we are constantly watching during a Carstensz Expedition. When the weather comes, it is time for the team to practice that patience and flexibility. These are two things that we talk about long before the expedition… of course, putting them into practice when we need to is always challenging.

We are looking forward to hearing from the team today and getting the last flight into Yellow Valley. Then it is time to start climbing Carstensz Pyramid!

Trekking Up The Khumbu Valley

October 17, 2018

Ang Karma Sherpa and our 3X2 and Ama Dablam Team at the Everest View Hotel (Romulo Cardenas)

The 3X2 trek and Ama Dablam Climbing Team enjoyed a good day acclimatizing, trekking and visiting the sights above Namche. After breakfast, the team set off for the Everest View Hotel and the village Khumjung. After a good night sleep in Namche, it is always fun and important to get out and stretch our legs.  The route to the Everest View Hotel is a serious test and never gets easier the first time. Departing the lodge in Namche, the team heads up what feels like an endless set of steps. Slow and steady and stopping to take photos is a great way to catch your breath and see all of Namche.  At the top of the stairs, the route switches to dirt and heads up the Syangboche airstrip. This is a dirt runway were the MI-17 helicopter lands with Everest supplies each spring.  From here, it is a gentle slope to the Everest View Hotel  All the effort to get to the hotel on the hill is worth it. The views are amazing and it is the first real look at Ama Dablam, Lhotse and Mount Everest. From the Everest View Hotel, it is a short walk downhill to Khumjung where the team ate lunch and visited the Monastery.

Our Private Gokyo Loop Trek led by IMG Guide Harry Hamlin had a great day as well. The team was up and out the door, enjoying the cool air of the Khumbu. A couple hours of moderate trekking is a nice way to get the blood flowing. After the first stretch, it is time to test out the lungs and legs and head up the famous Namche Hill. Part way up the hill, the team crossed the highest suspension bridge of the trek. The team is now resting in Namche and looking forward to their active rest day tomorrow.

All is well and the weather is great in the Khumbu Valley!

Big Views from the North Side of Everest

October 17, 2018

IMG Partner Eric Simonson checked in overnight from Rongbuk. The team was up early, departing Kharta early in the morning and heading to Rongbuk. With the new paved road, the trip took much less time than when Eric went to the North Side of Everest back in the 1980’s.

After arriving at Rongbuk, the team took the high trail route further up the Rongbuk to get more views of Mount Everest. There was a big lenticular over Everest but the views never disappoint.

Our 3X2 and Ama Dablam Teams have moved up to Namche today and will acclimatize tomorrow. They will trek up to the Everest View Hotel and around Khumjung where the monastery has received a face lift.  They will still be able to see the famous yeti skull in the monastery. After the hike, the team will return to Namche for another night.

Down valley, IMG Guide Harry Hamlin reported a perfect day of weather for flying. Our Private Gokyo Loop Trek arrived with all of their gear and had a great trek to Phakding. This is a short day of trekking and the team will enjoy a great night of sleep by the river. Tomorrow, they will head to Namche!

Getting the Money Shot in Tibet

October 16, 2018

Eric Simonson checked in overnight with some great photos! The team has been waking up early to see the sunrise everyday of the trek. This morning, they were rewarded with great views of the Himalaya.

Tsho Tshurigma over Langma La (17,300 ft) to Troshay meadow camp (14,000 ft). The trail to the Langma La pass from campsite near the first small lake at Tsho Tshurigrna passes another bigger clear aquamarine lake to climb steeply over rocky ground to reach the pass in just over two hours. The view of Makalu becomes more and more impressive as we climb upwards. Everest and all the other attendant peaks are also visible all the way to the pass. Once at the Langma La we will bid our farewell to the Khangsung valley and the impressive panorama of some of the highest mountains in the world and plunge steeply down rock moraines and glaciated valleys.

Eric and Anthony at Langma La (Eric Simonson)
View looking towards Kharta from Langma La (Eric Simonson)

After about 2 hours, we reach the trail junction from where many days ago we climbed to the Shao La. After crossing the river below Yulba Village we will soon reach our riverside campsite from where we started our trek to the Khangsung glacier. The circuit of this fascinating trek will thus be complete. Overnight camp at Kharta.
