December 30, 2015

Cheetah and cubs - Last photo from the team

Cheetah and cubs – Last photo from the team

Max, Phunuru and team have finished up game viewing in the Crater and returned to the Sopa Lodge on the Crater rim for their final night together.  They will be heading back to Arusha and everyone will be off on their separate ways.  Some heading home, some heading to Zanzibar, and Phunuru heading back to Nepal.

Congratulations, again, to all the team and guides and we also want to thank our climbers for joining IMG on another safe, successful and fun adventure.  Happy New Year!!

Updates From Aconcagua Teams

December 29, 2015

Aconcagua Dec 26 Team

Aconcagua Dec 26 Team

Aconcagua Team #2 is all together, they’re prepped with permits in hand, and ready to begin their approach tomorrow. Josh McDowell, Robert Jantzen and Martin Villegas will be the guides. Josh has climbed personally with most of the team before and is looking forward to another shared adventure. If all goes according to plan, the team should reach Plaza Argentina, base camp, on New Year’s Day. Heck of a way to start the new year.

Given the current weather, we expect that Mike Hamill’s team was able to make their carry today to C2. They’re making good progress.

Kili Team On Safari!

December 29, 2015

From: Max Bunce

Subject: Safari pics

The group had a full day of game viewing in the Serengeti today. We took an off the track way to the Ndutu Safari Lodge just inside the Ngorongoro Reserve. Along the way we went straight through the migration which included wildebeests and zebras as far as the eye can see! Tomorrow we are headed to the Ngorongoro Crater. Just another spectacular Christmas Kilimanjaro trip!

Vinson Team Flying To The Ice

December 29, 2015

Team photo in Punta Arenas, Chile

Team photo in Punta Arenas, Chile

Vinson #2 is off and running.  Weather in the States tried to keep part of the team stuck at home but no chance.  They hung tough, were patient and smart, and got to Punta Arenas in time to make the flight to the Ice this morning.  IMG guides, Greg Vernovage and Austin Shannon, kept the faith and had everything ready for our climber’s ‘last minute arrival’.  That’s what they call teamwork.  Sounds like the flight went off right on schedule this morning and we’ll hear from the team again once they reach the Ice and get settled in.

Meanwhile, In The Southern Hemisphere

December 28, 2015

Now that the Christmas holiday is over, let’s get everyone updated on IMG trips currently ‘south of the border’.  In this case, way south.  Mike Hamill checked in this morning to let us know his Aconcagua crew had moved up to C1, at just over 16,000’.  Weather’s reasonable and the team is moving well.  Josh McDowell also checked in with news of his team, currently in Mendoza.  They are wrapping up their preparations, securing permits this afternoon, and heading for Penitentes in the morning.  That means they’ll begin their approach on the morning of 30 Dec.  All’s good there, just chomping at the bit and anxious to start walking.

Union Glacier, Antarctica

Union Glacier, Antarctica

Further south is Greg Vernovage and his Vinson team.  They’re in Punta Arenas, gathering last members and bags and getting ready to fly as soon as weather permits to the Union Glacier, around 80 degrees S. latitude.  Weather in certain locations in the States made getting to Punta tough for some of our members but it all got done and this team, too, is ready to get to it.

So, 2 Aconcagua teams will be on the mountain New Year’s Eve and 1 will be on Vinson in Antarctica.  You have to admit, pretty cool way to start the new year.

A “Winter” Climb Of Mt. Washington

December 28, 2015

We had a great trip to the summit of Mt. Washington on Saturday, December 26th. It remained clear and sunny all day long. We approached the base of the upper mountain via the Tuckerman Ravine trail. After almost two miles we connected to the Lion’s Head trail which eventually skirts around the top of Tuckerman’s Ravine and gave us great views looking down into the  ravine and up to the summit. Usually this time of year we are wearing crampons all the way to the top from the trail junction but on this particular day we wore tennis shoes and light jackets all the way to the summit. Lauren and Bert had done their homework and cruised up to the top of the highest mountain in New England like it was nothing. We had spectacular views for 360 degrees. After 15 minutes on top and a few pictures it was time to head down. As the afternoon went on we found a bit of ice on rocks on the lower portions of the trail that had formed as the sun sank on the horizon.

Though we has spring like conditions the current forecast is telling us that winter is headed this way in the next couple of days. So…all I can say is sharpen your ice tools and give us a call!

Weekend Check-In From IMG Teams Abroad

Elephant Family celebrates Kili Summiteers!

Kilimanjaro:  Big Christmas group on Kilimanjaro and a big success. Everyone – all 16 – summited Kilimanjaro on Christmas day. WOW! One of our customers is a great friend, and his entire family of 5 stood together on Uhuru. A Christmas day they’ll never forget. Everyone is down at Mweka Camp, in bed and warm, fed, and dead tired. The entire team climbed strong and is now looking forward to their safari.

Aconcagua:  Other Christmas news includes our Aconcagua teams. Mike Hamill and crew took a rest day at base camp and are now getting ready for their first carry to C1. Weather’s good and forecast looks like nice for a few days. Additionally, Josh McDowell checked in to let me know IMG Guide Robert Janzten and he have arrived Mendoza and were met by our Argentine guide, Martin Lucero. They’ll finish shopping and packing and be awaiting the arrival of our second Aconcagua team for the season. All good there.

Vinson Massif:  Finally, Greg Vernovage and Austin Shannon are now in Punta Arenas, Chile and waiting for the arrival of their climbers for our second Vinson expedition of the season. They’ve got a full crew, most of whom arrive on the 27th.

Bottom line, life is good for the IMG teams in Tanzania, Argentina and Chile (heading for Antarctica). Indeed – a very Happy Holiday season.

Holiday Greetings From Argentina

December 24, 2015

View from the tent

View from the tent

Day 2 of the approach is history for the Aconcagua team. So far, so good. Mike reports lots of water in the rivers and snow up high but weather’s been nice on the approach. The team will reach base camp, Plaza Argentina, tomorrow, Christmas day. Pretty cool, actually. Our service providers in Argentina, Grajales Expeditions, do all the food for our teams at base camp and I have no doubt tomorrow’s dinner will be special.

Holiday Wishes to the team and they send their best to family and friends back home. Christmas and New Years on Aconcagua……priceless.

Christmas Eve At Karanga Camp

December 24, 2015

On Top of Barranco Wall (Phunuru Sherpa)

On Top of Barranco Wall (Phunuru Sherpa)

Max called in from Karanga Camp (13,000’). All is well with the team as they moved through one of the tough parts of the climb. The Barranco Wall! This wall requires a bit of rock scrambling and attention to where you put your feet but with all of the Chagga Guides that Max has, the team cruised.

They arrived at camp early and have plenty of time to rest before moving to High Camp tomorrow. It will be a short day tomorrow into Barafu High Camp (15,000’). A good dinner and early to bed, it is like Christmas! OH wait! It will be Christmas!

They are in position for a full moon Christmas on Kilimanjaro!
