Into the Wild (Part 2)

October 17, 2013

Here are a few pictures from our day exploring the villages around Wamena. One of our local guides, Nanang, lived with these guys traditionally for about 1 year. These are Dani people, and it was very cool to have him show us around. The Dani showed us how to make a fire with no lighter and cooked us sweet potatoes. Pretty cool day.

Tomorrow we fly to Mandala. We met with the pilots over dinner, and our plan is to take off at 7am. The pilots are expecting a 1hr 15min flight. It will be an exciting flight. No one on the helicopter tomorrow has been anywhere near this area, and we don’t even know where we are going to land. We have a few ideas from Google Earth but will have to make a quick last minute choice. We get 350kg of total weigh including our body weight. We are planning on a 3 night trip and have some extra food just in case.

3 x 3 Trekkers On Their Way

Loading up the plane in Kathmandu for the Lukla flight (Erica Engle)

Erica Engle called to report that the 3 Peak 3 Pass team successfully made it to Lukla (about 9320 feet) with all their luggage.  That is the way we like to start a trip!!  Then, they had a nice downhill trek today to Phakding (8560 feet) down in the valley on the bank of the Dudh Kosi river.

This was always one of my favorite camps.  After all the stress and strain of the international travel and duffel shuffle it is great to be down by the river knowing that all you have to do now is hike!

Trikora Wrap Up

October 16, 2013

Rappelling the mud hill just below our high camp (photo: Dan Zokaites)IMG guide Dan Zokaites reports that the team successfully made it back to Wamena yesterday and are now enjoying a rest day at the hotel.  They will have a chance to explore the town a bit and get organized and packed up for their next climb of Puncak Mandala.  For tomorrow morning they have a helicopter arranged to fly them to this very remote peak which is much farther to the east, quite near the border with Papua New Guinea.  The internet is pretty slow over there, but Dan was able to send some photos they took on the Trikora climb… quite an adventure!

3 Peak 3 Pass Trekkers And Climbers Ready To Go!

October 16, 2013

3 Peak 3 Pass Trekkers and Climbers (Ang Jangbu Sherpa)

3 Peak 3 Pass Trekkers and Climbers (Ang Jangbu Sherpa)

IMG guide Erica Engle reports from Kathmandu that the 3 X 3 Trekkers and Lobuche Peak climbers are all in Kathmandu and ready to fly to Lukla in the morning.  The big tropical cyclone that hit India over the weekend pushed a bunch of moisture north into the Himalayas, and it has been raining hard for the last several days.  In the mountains there has been several feet of fresh snow.  Finally, today it has begun to clear and the Lukla flights this morning made it in for the first time in several days…good timing for our team!

Today our crew did gear checks, took care of last minute errands, and enjoyed a team dinner this evening.  They will be up at about 4AM for an early departure from the hotel as they are scheduled on the first wave of Lukla flights tomorrow.  So far, so good!

All Is Well For Sikkim Team

October 16, 2013

Phil checked in again to report that all is well – the team was wowed by a spectacular view of Kangchenjunga (8586m) first thing in the morning.  An early breakfast was followed by a 5 hour drive to Pelling, West Sikkim (2150m) where they stopped to visit the Pemayangste monastery – the 2nd oldest monastery in Sikkim circa 17th century.  Dinner and a good night’s sleep at the beautiful new Chumbi Mountain Resort – first class all the way!  They’ll start walking after breakfast and a scenic drive tomorrow morning.

Another dispatch from Phil and the Sikkim Trekkers early this morning:

“Super day in Darjeeling.  Kicked it off with a fancy breakfast at the Windamere hotel, followed by visits to HMI (Himalayan Mountaineering Institute) and the zoo to see a snow leopard and red panda.  The big treat was lunch at the home of Sita and Nawang Gombu. Gombu passed away recently – he was a mountaineering legend.  Final stop at a Tibetan refugee center in the afternoon and a walk through town.  We’re off in the morning.”

Trikora Summits!

October 14, 2013

Puncak Trikora

Puncak Trikora

IMG guide Dan Zokaites called to report that the team reached the true summit (15,584 feet) of Puncak Trikora today, the 3rd highest peak in Papua.  From Wamena it took them four days and three camps.  Dan said they needed their rubber boots on the trek and that the travel was reminiscent of crossing the plateau to Mt. Carstensz with forest, bog, mud and everything in between on the way to the high camp.  The summit day took them over 14 hours roundtrip with considerable 3rd, 4th, and 5th class rock climbing (up to about 5.6) along the way.  All total, they spent over 12 hours above 14,700 feet ascending and descending the long rocky summit ridge with huge drop offs on each side.  The trip out will take two days back to Wamena, accompanied by their eleven porters.  Well done, team!

Sikkim Trekkers Taking In The Sights

April, Sue & Adrienne in front of the Presidential Palace in Delhi (Phil Ershler)

Arrived in Darjeeling yesterday afternoon.  Had a good day sightseeing in Delhi and a super dinner afterwards. Then, flew to Bagdogra this morning and another 2.5 hours drive before arriving at the Windermere Hotel. The cyclone that hit East India over the weekend is causing rain now but should leave the area in a day or two. Meanwhile, all’s good with us. Will visit HMI in the morning, do some packing and visit some old friends. Life is good.

Where In The World Is Dan Zokaites?

Dan, Steven, and Anthony ready to climb!

Dan, Steven, and Anthony ready to climb!

IMG guide Dan Zokaites called yesterday on the sat phone from Wamena in the Baliem Valley, a fertile area surrounded by the high mountains of central Papua and the traditional homeland of the Dani, Lani, and Yali tribes.  There are no roads leading to this city, but there are cars and trucks…all flown in by airplane!  Now Dan is moving forward for the second part of his Indonesia adventure, after the Carstensz Pyramid expedition that wrapped up last week.  He has joined up with adventurer Anthony Nightingale and our Indonesian guide Steven to climb a couple of the most remote Papuan mountains.  First they will go to Puncak Trikora and then after that to Puncak Mandala.  We will look forward to following along with them as they go about as far off the map as is possible in the 21st century!

In case anyone’s interested in what I’m up to these days, we’re heading to Sikkim today for a custom group trek.  Got engaged in Sikkim many years ago and it’s been several years since our last trek there.  We’ve got a large group of friends heading over with us and we’ll get out some updates when we can.

The trip starts in Delhi.  We fly from there to Bagdogra, in the State of West Bengal, and then head up to Darjeeling.  Darjeeling is the home of the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute and is where my good friend, Nawang Gombu, lived until his passing a couple of years ago.  From there, it’s into Sikkim and a couple of weeks on our trek to watch the sun rise on the East Face of Kangchenjunga.

Our good friend, Mark Ursino, is on this trek.  Mark has been all over the world with IMG.  And, he’s a blogger extraordinaire!  Check out www.markursino.com as we go to learn more about Sikkim and what we’re up to.  Should get you excited for the next IMG trek over here.
