{"id":5027,"date":"2011-10-22T10:22:03","date_gmt":"2011-10-22T18:22:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mountainguides.com\/wordpress\/?p=5027"},"modified":"2011-10-22T10:35:47","modified_gmt":"2011-10-22T18:35:47","slug":"weather-improves-annapurna-trekkers-over-thorung-la","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mountainguides.com\/wordpress\/2011\/10\/22\/ama-dablam\/weather-improves-annapurna-trekkers-over-thorung-la\/","title":{"rendered":"Weather Improves, Annapurna Team Over Thorung La"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>October 22, 2011<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_5028\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mountainguides.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/satimage.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"lightbox[5027]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5028\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5028 \" title=\"October 22 Satellite Image\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mountainguides.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/satimage.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mountainguides.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/satimage.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mountainguides.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/satimage-300x145.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-5028\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">October 22 Satellite Image<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Eben Reckord reports by sat phone that the weather today was greatly improved after the snowstorm that came through yesterday.\u00c2\u00a0 The Annapurna Trekkers were able to successfully cross east to west over the famous Thorung La pass (17,769 ft \/ 5416m) which links the Manang area with Muktinath.\u00c2\u00a0 The trekkers started before dawn at Thorung Phedi (14,500 ft \/ 4420 m) and climbed to the pass, then dropped all the way down to Muktinath (12,160 ft \/ 3710m).\u00c2\u00a0 Geographically, the west side of the pass is much drier, very much like Tibet.\u00c2\u00a0 Also today, Eben and the team moved up to Chulu Base Camp.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>On the Everest side, Justin Merle reports that the Everest\/Lobuche\/Ama Dablam team also enjoyed a nice sunny acclimatization day at Lobuche BC, which melted some of the snow that fell yesterday.\u00c2\u00a0 The team is doing well and they will be moving on schedule tomorrow to Gorak Shep.<\/p>\n<p>Attached is the current weather map, showing the strong band of clouds and moisture that currently sits just to the north of the Himalayas.\u00c2\u00a0 While the autumn is normally a pretty stable time for weather, there have been some big snowstorms at this time.\u00c2\u00a0 For example, an all-time epic storm, <a href=\"http:\/\/articles.latimes.com\/1987-10-30\/news\/mn-11753_1_bus-tour\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in autumn 1987<\/span><\/a>\u00c2\u00a0 dumped several meters of snow at this time of the year.
