Elizabeth Hawley, Nepal\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s iconic reporter, sets the record straight on the most tumultuous decades in Nepal\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s political history.<\/p>\n
Ask any accomplished Himalayan mountaineer, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Who is the preeminent keeper of summit facts?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and they will answer, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Elizabeth Hawley\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.\u00c2\u00a0 Since the early 1960s, Hawley has filed detailed reports on some 80,000 ascents \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a massive catalogue that has been published as the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Himalayan Database\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, a virtual Bible for all world-class climbers.<\/p>\n
What is less well known is that Hawley was also compiling irreplaceable chronicles of the political upheaval that was taking place in Nepal from 1988 to 2007.\u00c2\u00a0 From the 1989 uprising resulting in the emergence of a constitutional monarchy…to the beginning of the Maoists \u00e2\u20ac\u0153People\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s War\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in 1996\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6to the infamous 2001 Palace Massacre \u00e2\u20ac\u201c which took the lives of the king and all his immediate family…to the end of the ten-year conflict, which ultimately resulted in the abolishment of the monarchy, Elizabeth Hawley was there to unflinchingly document the facts.\u00c2\u00a0 Now, for the first time, those chronicles will soon be available to the public in a published version: “The Nepal Scene, Chronicles of Elizabeth Hawley, 1988-2007”<\/strong>, a two-volume set.<\/p>\n
