Rainier back in 1939 with handmade ice axes, his early years of  guiding in the 1940\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s under the leadership of chief guide Clark Schurman (via  the Kautz route back then), his days as a Mt. Rainier NPS climbing ranger, the  second ascent in 1946 of Mt. St. Elias in Alaska, \u00c2\u00a0the 1953 American K2 expedition  where he and his companions were stopped by Pete Schoening\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s all time famous  anchoring (\u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Belay\u00e2\u20ac\u009d), and his many years as author, historian, geographer,  and artist.\u00c2\u00a0 Dee\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 40th anniversary edition of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/159485520X\/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=486539851&amp;pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&amp;pf_rd_t=201&amp;pf_rd_i=0916890708&amp;pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&amp;pf_rd_r=1KGAHAMTSTWJYRKQN8FP\" target=\"_blank\">The Challenge of Rainier<\/a> is due  out later this year, from Mountaineers Books.<\/p>\n<p>After  the show Phil Ershler, George Dunn, Greg Vernovage, and I walked out into the  dark Paradise parking lot and looked up to a magnificent sky full of stars,  barely illuminating a towering Mt Rainier.\u00c2\u00a0 The cloud cap that had been flying  over the summit all day had disappeared and the night was calm.\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0I thought of  the poem by Clark Schurman that Dee had closed his show  with:<\/p>\n<p><em>Last  campfires never die.<br \/>\nAnd you and I, on separate ways to life&#8217;s  December,<br \/>\nWill always dream by this last campfire,<br \/>\nAnd have this mountain  to remember.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Eric  Simonson<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>August 3, 2011 We were treated last night to a delightful slide show at Paradise Inn by 93 year old Rainier legend and mentor, Dee Molenaar.\u00c2\u00a0 Dee showed slides from his first climb of Mt.
