(Greg Vernovage)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Andy just called after returning to Illimani BC.\u00c2\u00a0 The Team was up early and gave it their best shot today.\u00c2\u00a0 Unfortunately, the mountain got the upper hand.\u00c2\u00a0 For those of you who have climbed Mount Rainier, I will use examples from a couple different routes to describe their day.<\/p>\n<p>Out of the High Camp on Illimani, the Team took a rocky ridge, like the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Disappointment Cleaver on steroids.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0 After this section, the team battled through tall \u00e2\u20ac\u0153penitentes\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (these are ice pinnacles produced by strong sunshine at high altitude, and they make travel slow and difficult).\u00c2\u00a0 Then, the team started up the last part of the climb but the conditions were considerably more icy than normal. \u00c2\u00a0Andy called it \u00c2\u00a0\u00e2\u20ac\u0153a little steeper than the Kautz chute\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6oh yeah, and the Kautz chute above 6,000 meters!\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p>The Team made the call to turn around and leave the summit for another time.\u00c2\u00a0 Good job making a tough call.
